Would Max Baer give Ali a tougher fight than Chuvalo did in '66?

Well nobody has picked Baer yet including myself so you are alright to that extent.

    Would Baer trouble him?

I guess his power and agresion would give Ali some issues if he turned up to fight. Anybody in the same sort of power bracket as Foreman, Shavers, Lyle who preses the fight and isnt bothered by Alis counters is not going to be a walk in the park.

The thing to remember about Baer is that he was crude but for various reasons he beat much better technical boxers.

Schmeling was one of the best technicians the era had.

Even Carnera was a much better technical boxer than Baer with every physical advantage possible and he still got chopped down.

Fightin Baer is a bit like fighting a man with a baseball bat. He is crude and fairly predictable but he is going to chop you down in the end.

Liston had comparable power, superior skill and was very agressive, but he didn't land much of note on Clay/Ali, who then hadn't quite reached his very best yet.

    Take it easy.

He has the right to make his case just as everyone else does.

As boxing is also a Mental sport, would Max be able to cope with the Ali pre fight Bombast ? I gather Max rather caved in Mentally against Louis with the pressure of meeting a ring assassin, how would he fair against someone who might turn him into a spectacle long before the first bell ? Its alright for Max to Mug about with a Lumbering Carnera, I have my suspicions that he might be left rather nervous and flustered by Ali
as i say, even before the 1st bell ! Once that 1st bell goes Ali might just Increase Max's Nightmares.

My one observation would be that the type of mind games that Ali exceled at were verry dissimilar to the ones that Louis exceled at and frankly very similar to the type that Baer exceled at.

This is one fight where I would follow the pre fight build up religeously. Seeing Ali andd Baer trying to wind each other up would be worth the pay per view.

If Baer had not made the bulk of his career his money when he meet Ali, heck yes he would have given Ali a tougher fight than Chavalo did.

Chavalo always brought his lunch pail and work ethic to boxing. Bear only did this for special occasions.

    Chuvalo was technically sound.

Baer would not exert himself to the extent needed to effectively 'hunt' Ali down like Chuvalo did.

Ali would have an easier time.
