Would Max Baer give Ali a tougher fight than Chuvalo did in '66?

If Baer was a combination puncher who had a good jab as well then I think he would have stood a very good chance. Since he wasn't, Ali would take him. Max would be a stand up straight target for Ali and lose by decision.

 

Ali was able to operate around the jab of a Liston who had lost some of his speed.Baer was not quicker than Liston.Also,I don't see Baer outboxing Ali.

I can't see Max with a aggressive style and telegraphed right hand punches lasting the distance with Ali TBH.

 

BIG DEE HERE= Baer fought in a style like another fighter ali fought. Baer with his crossarm defense and his right hand over the top is like Ken Norton. Norton gave Ali hell
in all of their fights. When Baer had his confedence together he was as tough an opponent as there was in heavyweight history. Baer didn`t cut easily as he was hardly ever cut in his fights around the eyes. When he first tasted Ali`s punches he would have
laughed at him and walked on in. Ali would have won but it would have been all but easy.
Baer could go 15 rds at a very good pace without getting tired. Ali better not zig when he should have zaged or Bear could plant him right on his ass. Maxie only needed one punch one do the job not 4,5 or 6

 

Baer did use a cross armed defence in some of his fights notably those later in his career when he was past his best.

The Nova fights illustrate this.

No way. Ali would have beaten up Baer. Totally different era.

 

No way ... Chuvalo threw endless combos to the body ... Baer did not throw a four punch combo in his career ...

 

Baer would have come out cocky as hell and tried to knock Ali out with a big right hand. The thing is Maxie would keep missing and missing the elusive Ali, and Baer would start to get rattled by this. Ali would then start taunting Baer and do the Ali shuffle with 6 or 7 punch combination to the head. I can see this fight turning into a Ali-Cleveland Williams replay by the 8th round. By the 9th, Baer would try one last Hail Mary right hand and Ali would send Baer into LaLa Land with a straight right hand.

Now in the above scenario, all this is predicated on the fact that Maxie never learned to Jab and stick and move. If Angelo Dundie trains Maxie for 1 year before this fight, then it goes the full 15 rounds of entertaining majic and it would be a draw.

Both these fighters provided entertaining fights in their prime!!!
