Body or balls? What round and what time i will have another look. I don't recall Holmes being in much trouble at all excepting shots to the nuts. Been a while tho.

I admit my brain may have merged the ballshot and that left hook into one quality punch.

Cooney had a beautiful left hook it was a freakish arm next to his right hand but I agree with Longhorn71, he rushed into a 15 rd fight without ever going past 8rds. His managers rushed for the money & Big Gerry did not have the confidence. I watched Cooney in the amateurs (I seen him win the golden gloves as a middleweight) & the pro's & withnessed his left hook power to the body & head (quite a hook) Valle also taught him a lot in the pro's but he was just not ready mentally or physically (he had 2 one round KO's in 2 years so only fought 2 rds & never went past the 8th rd. so he was not best prepared. That being said Holmes was pretty good at staying away from the hook it was the right hand that was his kryptonite so while Baer could be outboxed he could decapatate you with the right hand....I see Holmes outboxing him but if Reynado Snipes could put Larry on his ass with the right hand I wouldnt say Baer had no chance. Baer did kill Frankie Campell in the ring & many say it was his right hand that killed Earnie Shaff although Primo finished him off. ....Baer was erratic but look at the Schmeling fight when he was fit & mean....Larry should win a wide one but watch out for the Baer right

Yeah that was his best legal shot of the fight from memory. Holmes certainly felt it but had no trouble thereafter. Certainly a good shot. The ball shot at 19.18 well and truly smashed him. Cooney backed straight off. Others may have followed up quickly before the ref got there LOL

I'm also in the camp that Cooney could have been a good fighter with the proper seasoning but at the end of the day he probably would have still been lacking mentally.

What? Are you serious? Because if you are then you have no clue what you are talking about... Cooney was a big puncher but wad weak physically for his size,i think that he had a skinny frame,he started at mw in the amateurs at 6'6 of height

i mean that he was strong but couldnt place them well.

I have never meant durable, if that what you mean. "strong" to me means "power".

Having hitting power has nothing to do with being physically strong.cooney had power but he was not a strong man for his size

Cooney gave Holmes a good fight. And he did hurt Holmes just before the bell to end round 4. Body shot.
Baer was crude and I think Larry easily outboxes him. However Larry was susceptible to right hands more than left hooks and Baer possessed a monster one. He could catch and hurt Larry even knock him down but Larry far to savvy for Baer. He wins going away.
Cooney actually fought a competitive fight. A fight he was rushed into and not prepared for both mentally and experience wise.

Cooney definitely gave Larry a hard fight in parts , for all his fault s he could whack hard. He should have waited a year or two ,or maybe another alphabet title shot .He gave Larry a lot harder time than a few of his title challengers for sure .
