.....if he'd got the title shot against Jimmy Braddock ahead of Joe Louis ? I'd say yes.

Yes...it would have been a reprise to Max's amazing upset of Louis..he would have done a similar methodical beatdown of the Cinderella Man. Probably a tko any where from the 10th to the 15th. Braddock's miracle well was probably dry and his great heart would have taken him just so far. Schmeling's right would have been just as dependable..just as merciless as it was vs Louis.

History would have reverted anyway,imo. Schmelling would have regained the title,and would only have kept it till he defended it against Joe Louis.

 

I feel Max got screwed by Braddock, his management (Braddock's) and Mike Jacobs. He couldn't have missed, in my personal opinion, regaining the title. The boxing world didn't want the title going to Nazi Germany..and what an awful deal that would have been.

 

The powers that be felt that way which is why Louis was pushed toward a title shot rather than Schmeling. Plenty of racism toward black fighters at that time... a black man had not had a HW title shot since Jack Johnson.

The feeling was that a black champ (who was very careful in what he said and they way he acted around the media, unlike Johnson) was better than a nazi HW Champ (even though in reality Schmeling was a decent man).

The deal was made for Louis and Braddock actually got a piece of Louis' future purses (WTF?). Braddock fought well and even dropped Louis in the 1st before being stopped in 8.

Braddock made some smart moves toward the end of his boxing career.

As for Braddock vs. Schmeling (who was considered past prime)? It's a toss up really but I'd lean toward Schmeling.

 

Braddock would have found it more difficult to move away from Schmeling's pin-point accurate right hands than Baer's wild bombs. Schmeling was still in good form by the late 30's, it's not like Braddock had the power to take him out unlike a Joe Louis who was determined to kill that night.

 

I thought Charles beat Walcott in their 4th fight... he should have been a 2x HW Champ as well. He would have defended the title vs. Marciano before his losses to Valdes and Johnson had that happened. Would he have been able to beat Marciano at that point?

After the 4th fight with Walcott, Charles did lose a close fight vs. Rex Layne that could have went either way. It was their 2nd fight. He had cut Layne and dropped him several times prior to stopping him in 11 in their 1st fight. He beat Layne convincingly by decision in their 3rd fight, dropping him several times. Marciano beat Walcott for the title about a month and a half after this fight.

After the loss to Layne, Charles went 9-0 (5) including clear wins over Cesar Brion, Jimmy Bivins, and Rex Layne. He had yet to fight Valdes, Johnson, or Marciano x2. After the 9 fight winning streak he lost to Valdes, lost to Johnson, beat Wallace and Satterfield, then lost to Marciano x2. To Charels credit his fights with Valdes and Johnson were close and could have went either way.
