Would Mayweather have been anywhere near as popular in the 90s?

I believe that the only reason Mayweather is popular is because there were no good American heavyweights in the 2000s.

In the 90s he would have to compete in popularity against Tyson, Holyfield, Bowe and even old Foreman.

As Don King said there are two divisions in boxing - heavyweights and then the rest.

I don't think he was popular at all. People just wanted to see him lose.

    That's the same thing.

Which SFW fighters did people care about in the 90s?

Nobody outside of boxing and sports knows who he is

He doesn't compare to the heavyweights of the 90s

54 year old Mike Tyson is more popular globally then him

Pictures of him on social media with piles of cash, private jets etc helped him build up the image/brand of the money team etc.

Early in his career when he was younger and fresh faced he was pretty boy floyd and then transformed into “money” Mayweather.

People give him stick for not been able to read very well etc but he sure knows how to market himself.

He thinks he's the best for years but isn't even the most famous fighter in his sport

He doesn't come close to Ali or Tyson level fame

He is like two tiers below them

In the boxing community he would be equally known. His boxing is just too close to perfection to be ignored/unnoticed.

Out of the boxing community, well, I have no clue about who are the top cricket players now. And in the 90's either. Neither I will know in 2040. :nusenuse: I just dont give a ****.

So I think it would have been pretty much the same, tbh.

Undefeated American in the 90s would've sold itself. But he would never be as popular as the American heavyweight wrecking ball, Mike Tyson.

A number of my friends who don't really follow boxing consider the lower weight divisions in same breath as womens divisions in other pro sports. So it's only the heavyweights they're interested in knowing about or tuning in for.

Head to head Tyson would have been more popular it`s just that Mike wasn`t in his prime in the 90`s and started to lose, Tyson was a global superstar known to casuals, Floyd was not.

A little less as there was no social media

Oscar wasn't a heavyweight and he was popular

Floyd is just as savy If not more the idea that he wouldn't be popular is pretty dumb but I think hes a little bit of a product of his time given social media

How much bigger would tyson have been with Twitter fb insta etc

He could have been if he had the mentality of "I want to beat everyone" rather then, "I beat the champ. I'll MAYBE defend my belt, but I have to move to another divisions, because youngsters think moving up in weight is what greatness is about."

Floyd did the very minimum expected of a champion and moved on.

No. Roy Jones was more exciting and undefeated for most of the decade. Would totally cut into Mayweathers narrative which sold more than his actual fights which could be boring. Plus America still was relavent with big names at Heavy which would of put a cap on his earning power.
