It seems to be that mayweather often tries to come across as the villain!
He repeatedly says that HBO are trying to fight guys to beat him.

Its fair to say that a lot of people buy his PPV fights to see him lose, those that dont like floyd of course.

He acts like an idiot on 24/7's to hype the fight so that more people buy it.

My question is, would he still have these high PPV sales if he didnt act like the villain? Pacquiao and hatton for example have huge fan bases and are very likeable guys.

Controversy sells. That's why even the good guys usually sell more when faced with a bad guy. People get pissed, start to argue. If you want one guy to win and one guy to lose, you're alot more involved in the event. If you're not emotionally invested, then your interest level drops.

That's why Mexico vs PR fights do so well also.

They would be much lower. This stuff is calculated - Mayweather knows exactly what he's doing.

i agree that his numbers would be lower. But looking at oscar, manny and hatton for example these 3 were all very likeable guys and they do well. I guess it works both ways

I think he looses a lot of sales because people arnt wanting to watch him loose. On another note i think he gets a lot more fans because of a likable personality. Could just even out , i guess we will never know.

Depends. You don't have to act like a ****face to get high PPV numbers. Pac, De La Hoya, Leonard are a few examples of very popular fighters with a "nice guy" persona.

I truly believe that he gets these numbers not so much because he plays a villian, but this persona he has adapted of being "Money Mayweather". That character plays right into the culture of Bling, hood rich, flashy all those things that are hot not only in this generation (can't stand it BTW) but also the young black urban market who, up until Mayweather decided to go ghetto really wasn't all that interested in boxing.

I don't know, he was quite respectful of Marquez in 24/7 (until he drunk his own ****).

And he wasn't near as bad with Mosley as he was with Gatti, Oscar & Hatton.

I think he knows now that he sells and doesn't need to play the villain near as much as he used to.

But i think the persona he created did help greatly towards his PPV sales, that and the other man he was fighting.

Fair play, Marquez doesn't speak English very much.

Would be lower for sure, cos his fights are boring, everybody only watches him in a hope someone will beat his ass.

    Less

He would do more if he was an exciting fighter who took more risks.
