That's just the common opponent theory which we all know doesn't mean much.

By the time Kalule fought McCallum he had not only been stopped by Leonard but also stopped by Davey Moore in a brutal fight. As a matter of fact he fought McCallum less than 4 months after Moore beat him. Maybe not the wisest of decisions.

I'm sure if Leonard "boxed" Ayub he would have beaten him with much less return fire but it quite likely would have been a distance fight.

Again JT. Your on point. Also what must be considered and what
some miss is when Leonard fought Kalule, he was a undefeated champion.
When he fought Mccallum , he was coming off a loss to Davey Moore. He
had clearly slipped by the time of the Mccllum fight.

Agree. McCallum's one of my favourites but I think Sugar Ray would outhustle him from the outside, competitive fight though and McCallum has his moments but a UD for Leonard.

I always thought Ray was trying to get that big stoppage to hype up the Hearns fight coming up in a few months so he stood there trying to tee off and got hit. Remember Hearns was on the undercard against Baez. This was the Houston Astrodome and there was pressure to look good-southpaw Kalule, and still Ray knocked him out. And when Kalule lost to Mike, that was after Ray and Davey Moore. So I am not sure that was the same Kalule. In retrospect he was hit a little, but when you look at a guy moving up and winning a title just like that it was impressive.

I love McCallum but you’ve got to favor Leonard. He wouldn’t dominate but he’d win.

I didn’t think so. On either count. It’s been a while since I’ve watched either, and I have a sharper recollection of the Leonard fight, admittedly.

As I recall, Leonard took the shots and just seemed to brush the entire threat of Kalule off. He just walked him down, ate his shots, beat him up, and took him out. That was pretty much the perfect way to fight him, too.

McCallum got him a few years later and I didn’t get that sense of their fight at all. Just Kalule tagging him up and eventually wilting under the return fire. That’s what happens when a feather fisted, shaky chinned fighter coming off career altering losses faces off with a highly durable opponent with legitimate power. Even if there’s a skill disparity, which it looked to me like there was.

Yeah, I guess I’ll have to watch them again. That didn’t sound very objective to me, either.
