Leonard stepping up to face Carlos Monzon, is this at all a competitive fight? Or do you see Ray out of his depth?
I don't think Monzon would take Leonard, Duran, as lightly as Hagler did. Well when i mean lightly in regards to Leonard i can't see Monzon doing what Hagler did for the first 4 rounds for example. If it's a 12 rounder Monzon wins a decision if it's 15 rounds possibly Monzon gets a late stoppage.
Early rounds while fresh i think Leonard would do ok, but as the rounds mounted up Monzons physical advantages and ringmanship of utilising those advantages, would give Sugar Ray a tough night at the office. I guess other tangibles could come into play like ring size etc, which if big enough might be a positive for Leonard regarding being elusive. However i say Monzon prevails by UD after 15 rounds
I like Robinson. I think that yes, Monzon's very accurate jab is going to spell trouble and I think if he gets that awful double-jab right hand or jab double right hand into play early, curtains, but I don't think that would happen. Robinson is fast, defensively responsible and gives ground when he needs to. He also, against strong heavyweights, developed an awful one-handed body attack and that would matter here. More though, would Monzon's lack of "bustle", his deliberate if fluid presence. I see Robinson getting around the corner on that, consistently once he'd made peace with getting hit by Monzon's jab, one-handed, then two-handed, then free-flowing. I don't say this lightly, but I think Monzon is barely too static to beat Robinson and I think that Robinson might beat Monzon up - i'd pick Robinson by decision but I tell you what this would be worth ten bucks on a Robinson stoppage, corner, referee, cut, blood generally. Robinson to land all the best punches of the fight.
I think it would be, Stevie. For all his haters, Sugar Ray had balls and the ability to change tactics and gears, so not quite a pasting from Carlos.
We're talking Leonard here, right? Monzon pulls a Napoles on him and just outmans and beats him down. Stoppage later than Jose, 9th or 10th. That jab does a number on Leonard who has sparky counters, but Monzon controls distance and is great at rolling with shots.
You got the sympathy likes at least LOL. I pick Monzon & possibly even by late stoppage, but I think if this threads anything to go by, a bet on Leonard might be worth its weight in gold.
Monzon too big at middle — UD if 10 or 12, possibly late stoppage if it’s 15. If he comes down to welter, he’s a skeleton and Ray knocks him out. At catchweights, say meet at 155 or so, I’d favor Leonard to be stronger and maybe batter Monzon late.
