I'm suspicious looking at this matchup. What's the catch? I mean what advantages would Leonard have negotiated to tilt the advantage his way. Is Monzon in his prime? Is the ring gonna be the size of Canada? Roger Leonard, Angelo Dundee and Juanita Leonard are the judges? The fight is only scheduled for 5 rounds? Trust and believe there would be something. Maybe it would Donnie LaLonde with a wig on and a tan. JK
I saw it said on a forum once where someone was defending Leonard as a big fan, that he was a true warrior who would fight anyone in an alley if he had to, & the reply came, “Maybe, but Ray would dictate how many garbage cans were in the alley, the degree of lighting, whether or not a black or white stray cat would officiate the contest, etc…”
Carlos was too big, too strong, too durable and too focused. He wouldn't be outsmarting himself like MMH sometimes did. Monzon ignored the other guy and did what HE set out to do. "Your Jedi mind tricks don't work on me, boy!" Ray Leonard telegraphed his shots, which is why he couldn't hurt Duran and Shields. They saw everything coming because they didn't flinch. Neither would Escopeta. Necessarily the scheduled Championship Distance here, a limit both were accomplished at. I don't think it matters, and it wouldn't to Carlos either. To him, a win was a win. Carlos beats a woman every time...
Seems like i am the only one here tipping Ray. So lets put a different spin on this, not H2H but how do you rate this fighters on the ATG list? I have Ray in the 11 to 20 range and Carlos 20 to 30
Like many here feel, at MW, I’ve got Carlos via UD or later round stoppage. He was the most optimally sized MW in history - a true natural at that weight, at the very high end of the size spectrum. He wouldn’t fall prey to vanity as Halger did - pretty or not, he would do exactly what was necessary to get the job done, from go to whoa. I don’t preclude a Leonard victory completely - but it’s very unlikely and Ray would have to put in the fight of his life if he was, somewhow, able to over come Monzon. While I’m here, the other Sugar Ray, the original and superior Sugar Ray, does beat Monzon imo.
Yesterday I re-watched the film of Leonard beating up and destroying Pete Ranzany. That version of Leonard was a stone cold killer. Too fast for Monzon but the size disadvantage tilts the fight to Carlos if he can weather the early storm.
Young Ray L was really something New. Such sublime speed can only degrade, even if only gradually. Leonard was an absolute gun with those hands - and certainly, he had the killer instinct. Ray, P4P the superior fighter, but Carlos, complemented by his own fine skill set, seemingly too big and durable to overcome.
We’ll never know Noel. It’s not like there haven’t been numerous fights in boxing history that the majority got it flatly wrong as to the outcome. You might well be on the money. We can only hold so much conviction re a fight that didn’t and will never happen - no matter how certain we feel about the outcome.
Robinson-Monzon would be so weird, with both fighters’ women rabidly cheering their husbands opponent.
I keep seeing Monzon plodding after nobody Tony Licata round after round or seeing him struggle with nobody Bouttier and then envisioning Leonard being way to smart and too fast for him and Monzon stepping in potholes all night long. Then I see Monzon standing his ground against Briscoe and Valdez and being a cagey, determined and focused champion and then envisioning him using his size, smarts and toughness to make Leonard wish he would've negotiated some more concessions on his way to taking a rough decision loss. Good thread. Tough call in my eyes. Leonard was an ATG and found ways to win, but the size and weight may be the difference.
Mickey Duff whom I consider a very astute judge of fighters picked Monzon to beat Robinson, saying he would be able to drop his right hand over Rays guard. Apologies to the OP for diverting the thread. Monzon wins a comfortable decision over Leonard,or,if he goes for it a late round stoppage win.
