Prime Ali shipped plenty of well placed punches to the jaw. People are not created equal and some take a **** of a lot more knocking down than others. This is a very very simple concept as exemplified by guys like Hagler and McCall.

Why couldn't your god Tyson drop McCall in all their sparring wars? McCall was hardly impossible to hit.

This Ali being vulnerable to a left hook isn’t entirely true.
Fair enough the 3 knockdowns he suffered in his career were all from left hooks, but the common theme in all of them was his chin was in the air and he just happened to be fighting good left hookers!
He was also up in each case within a few seconds.
The fact is Ali took a zillion left hooks in his career and apart from 3 instances rode with them which nobody was better at, and remained on his feet.
If Frazier couldn’t keep Ali down with a monster shot on an unguarded chin when Ali was fatigued after 15 gruelling rounds then I don’t think Povetkin is.
    Edit:
I’ve just realised the OP is asking could Povetkin drop Ali with a left hook, of course he could on the unguarded chin!
I’d replied unlikely to knock him out.

Depends on your radar. The bodies ability to anticipate and prepare for punches counts for a lot. Maybe Whyte didn't see it coming, maybe Ali would? Utterly ridiculous question. . .
If this was a prime Ali 65 to 67 A, most likely he wouldn't be hit by it. B, to pacify those who don't accept that argument and insist Ali must be hit (to answer this ridiculous question) his radar would have reacted much faster than Whytes and he would not have gone down. And C, if this cannot be accepted either and we blindfolded Ali and tied his hands behind his back and let Povetkin have a free shot then Ali would be dropped ...but them again I would drop him also....but he would get up ! On both counts...lol

Let’s not downplay the impact of the lack of American success at heavyweight as well. If you ask me that’s actually more important than A & B

Yeah, I don't see why not. Ali was hurt and dropped by hooks throughout his career, and Povektin has one of the all time best hooks at HW (one of the best lead uppercuts as well). Whether he'd be stopped by it is another matter. But since that doesn't appear to be the question on the thread, that's an end to my post.

Yes, some take better punches, but everytime Ali was hit flush in the jaw, he went down.
Prime Ali was only hit once flush, by a cruiserweight in Cooper, and he went down.

Ali was only hit three times in his entire career?

Just when I think "he's probably reached the upper limit for verbal diarrhea now" you surprise me.

Joe Frazier himself landed multiple flush hooks on Ali's jaw and he went down once. Anyone who thinks this happened hasn't seen the fights or is a dum-dum.

No, because Povetkin wouldn’t have PEDs if they fought in Ali’s day and he’d test positive like he always does if the fought in modern testing conditions.

Povetkins left hook was no better than Lemon Brewsters , maybe Brewsters was better since it was the punch he destroyed Klitschko with.

Both were very good left hooks , but neither would feature on an ATG list

I was talking about being hit with a perfectly placed power punch in the jaw.
That is what this thread is about, isn't it ?! We are debating whether Ali will go down if Povetkin lands a clean power punch to Ali's jaw, not whether he'd be able to land such a shot or if he were to hit Ali with glancing blows.
It is quite clear to anyone who knows about boxing that guys like Liston and Foreman hit harder than Cooper, yet they could not hit Ali as cleanly/flush as Cooper did. That's why Cooper put him on his arse and the other 2 didn't.

It's about the angle at which a punch lands and how much force one can put behind it.
The punch creates the most damage when it comes from an angle where it will cause your neck and the head rotates very rapidly, thus your brain hits the inside of your skull, basically it bounces from side to side in the skull.
So unless the punch you deliver leads to that, than it is more than possible for a boxer to withstand it.

I wouldn't be shocked if Povetkin put Ali on his backside at some stage of the fight.

If you think he was only hit with three 'perfectly placed power punches in the jaw' then you need to watch more Ali. A lot more.
