Would Nunn Have Being Monzon s Downfall??

No, Monzon was a BAD BAD man. An elegant brute of a middleweight. Outstanding will-power and cardio too. 15 rounds? No hesitation in picking Monzon. He'd chop Nunn down.

 

I feel the best Nunn , a 6' 2" southpaw with a 77" reach, excellent speed , solid power and highly elusive would give Monzon fits .. how that plays out over 15 rounds I don't know for sure but I'd give him a terrific shot of a decision over 12 ..

Nunn with his height, reach, and southpaw style would have given a lot of middleweights from the past a nightmare. I think he is one of those forgotten middleweights. A lot of your champs from the 40s like Zale and Cerdan would have had a tough time with him because of his size, reach, southpaw stance and boxing skills. Against Monzon he is fighting a different character. At first glance, Monzon may look ordinary and nothing special, but he had that something extra you can't really point out. He makes adjustments and finds a way to win. Monzon by late KO.

 

Monzon never beat anyone remotely as dangerous as Michael Nunn.

 

I must admit that Monzon never faced anyone really good

briscoe was too slow and robotic

Griffith was too old

Napoles was too small and worn out

Licata was an overrated contender who had no punch at all

Valdez hit hard and was maybe the most durable middleweight i ever saw, but not the most versatile

Monzon would NOT be able to set the tone with Mike. nor would he be able to deal with his mobility, coming off second best but he WOULD easily survive.

Mike scores the big upset and ends Monzon's 7 year reign

 

Monzon was a 1-2 fighter most of the time who controlled distance well. He will not beat Nunn by his usual bag of tricks.

 

Monzon figures out, brutalizes Nunn remorselessly and stops him in 9 or 10....and as a side bar, Valdez knocks Hearn's head off his shoulders.

 

That is always the Monzon story .. he was better than he looked ... I know the man was a beast ( in and out of the ring ) , super tough, mean as all hell with a terrific chin and stamina. He was an all time great middleweight .. I agree but I'll be frank .. I feel he has become a slight touch overrated .. he dominated also based on his height and reach and he would not have that against a handful of the greatest or most difficult match ups ... he was not an A puncher and he did not have A speed .. there are guys with size and speed and power that I feel match up well against him .. no one would have it easy by any means but I do feel some decision him ..
