Mario Maldonado decked him, and wanted a rematch, claiming that he lost to Torito because, "I Wasn't in shape." While I didn't buy Maldonado's claim, I thought it was somewhat telling that he wanted a rematch.

If Maldonado's could floor him, then Hearns could have blasted him out.

Robbie Epps also said he wasn't hurt after being blasted out by Tony in just 1:32... :think

If Mario dropped Tony, maybe he thought he could do it again. If anything, I think Tony was taking this one lightly, that's probably why he was knocked down. Because after Tony gets up, he's now really pissed off and Mario is then beaten so badly he wants to quit.

I don't think Tony Ayala would take Hearns lightly.

So he wins a title and that makes him great?

A few guys beat Duran at these higher weight...none of them are going down are ATG.

Its all speculation for one...and ATG is not a term I throw around lightly..To say Ayala was a shoe in for this kind of status based on what we had seen up until that point is laughable..and frankly, poop talk.

maybe atg is a stretch because he didnt come far enough in his career but he had the potential to dominate his division the way Simon Brown did his.

Kalule: that was a given-Tony would destroy him, punch holes in him and stop him in three.

Moore would have been a good fight but eventually, this could have gone either way and in Moore's favor is not out of the question. I wouldnt bet on this fight.

You know he'd beat Duran. Duran's not even a real fighter as these higher weights; I dont care if he did take hagler the distance

Beat Wilfred for sure and if curry moved up, he knock the kid out. Hearns was a little up and down in his performances. Sure he could give but could he take?

So Tony at his weight might have turned out to be the next Simon Brown only slightly heavier

What do you make of Norris? I believe because of his dominant showings against other champions he makes ATG status. Remember, he wasnt expected to get by Mugabi

To put it into perspective, Howard Eastman was 'the most feared sparring partner' at one point and knocked Steve Collins into retirement in a session.

Sparring means jack **** I'm afraid

Tony Ayala was just a rugged bully with a porky build, even at 154 pounds in his prime days..... His skills were not all that great..... In fact, Ayala never fought a real "Live" body prior to going to prison......... Ayala had potential at best..... However, Ayala, like Mike Tyson, couldn't stand the heat if, his opponent stood-up at roared back..... Claiming that Tony Ayala would've been great is mythical to the max........ Christ, his best opponent was Yori Boy Campas in 2000, and Ayala was TKO'd.......

Tony Ayala had a real chance to go straight, but he blew it again..... Now he's serving out the rest of his term in prison......... Ayala is a bum............

Dont compare Ayala to Tyson .

Tyson for all his faults is infinitelly more proven then Ayala.

Tyson is a legit choice for a lower top 10 ATG HW spot at minimum Ayala did nothing in his carreer.

I need to do more research on Ayala, but my common sense tells me that after having only 20 odd fights before being incarcerated, he could not have been severely tested.

I think it's partly human nature to look at a prospect who for some reason didn't have a full career and romanticise what career he did have.

Tony Ayala MIGHT have beat Roberto Duran in 1982 or '83 at 154 pounds, since Duran was best between 135 to 147 pounds.... But, no way would Ayala have ever beaten Thomas Hearns or Mike McCallum at 154 pounds in 1983 or so...... I'm not so sure that Ayala could beat Davey Moore at 154 in 1982 or '83........ Moore was the weak link outta the bunch.....

And, at 160, Hagler would've ripped off Ayala's head and **** down his neck inside 4 or 5 rds between 1982 to 1983..... Ayala was screwed either way...... Several key players were way more accomplished and talented.....

Tony would have started his blitz by ko'ing either Duran or Moore, depending how the chips fell.

After blowing Mike McCallum out 2 rounds he would go into his first superfight, stopping Hearns in two after taking a couple of Hearns greatest ever right hands and simply becoming more enraged.

He'd then hammer up to 160, taking out Mustafa Hamsho in 3 bloody rounds and giving him grief to the tune of 75 stitches.

After this would come Hagler. Ayala, rocking Hagler constantly finally puts his punches together and leaves the Marvelous one outcold in the 4th.

After defending with a couple of quick ko's he moves up to 175 and promptly ko's Spinks in his first fight at the weight.

With no real challenges at 175 he steps on up to the big boys and stops Tony Tubbs with the first hook that finds his ribs cleanly.

He then poleaxes an aging Holmes in 3. 3 or 4 years later he takes apart the up and coming Tyson in 3 rounds, despite having his struggles with age, which is now starting to show. He defends 4 or 5 times including a win over Holyfield and retires. He comes back a couple of years later to stop this new pretender Lewis then promptly re-retires.

    The end.
