Would Olympic Gold medalist Serik Sapiyev be an elite pro?

Serik Sapiyev, winner of the Val Barker award, dominated his competition at the olympics. Sapiyev is fast, with quick feet, and punches in combination. His style is defined by movement, continual workrate, and punching in angles.

On the down side -- while his pace is perfect for 3 rounds, it's way fast a clip for the pros. Would have to learn to slow down a bit. Also, he doesn't sit down on his punches.

Will probably never turn pro, but the question is still interesting. How would Sapiyev do against the top welterweights including Mayweather, Pacquiao, and other fighters in the top 10 in the division?

    Here's a clip.

The first thought I got watching the video is that Spence has a really nice body attack, and is going to be a very good pro. As for Sapiyev. If he went pro after the 2008 games he would at least be the EBU champion. I can see him beating Pacquiao and giving Mayweather fits around this time if he was a pro since 08.

Did this fight take place on opposite day or something? :huh

Why is that Soviet gentleman boxing like a slick African-American...

...And the AA feller boxing like a crude, plodding, Mexican brawler?

    :think

I don't see why not. His style is no less suited to the pros than a Lomachenko, IMO.

Errol Spence's nickname is "black pearl" on account of how smooth, slick and black he thinks he is. Sapiyev thought otherwise

Their styles are nothing alike and Lomachenko's is much more well suited.

The only Google hits for "black pearl" and "Errol Spence" come from Eastsideboxing posts written by none other than "Vysotsky".

unless he's confusing Errol Spence with 1888 middleweight champ Harris Martin.

Exactly. For one thing, Loma is better at close quarters (a key component when speed slows later in the fight and the two combatants are draped on/near one another).

    :rofl:rofl

    Sapiyev's past 30 & he's already a national hero, don't think he'll ever turn pro,

I thought he was the best fighter in the games bar none. However, he is getting up there in age . . . he should have went pro awhile ago and he would have been very competitive at WW/jmw and could still be.

I know, we're in the hypothetical realm. I think he'd be pretty good but by round 7 against, say, Antonio Margarito he'd be in a world of trouble.

Lomachenko was the most talented fighter in the Olympics. Moreover his style is more well suited to the pro game than Sapiyev's.

What about Sapiyev's game isn't suited for the pros?

I didn't say it wasn't suited; I merely said Loma's was better suited.

Can Sapiyev fight at close range effectively? Maybe, but I didn't see. He's brilliant at range, but sometimes an opponent can close that range and make the fight at close quarters.
