I am a PACFAN and say his english is great and has no impact on his popularity. However, his popularity is affected by english. If *******s did not know english Pac would be the most popular fighter in the last 25 years.

Well I'm sure if his english was on par with a rhymin, jivin ali, he'd have a more interesting character rather than that mundane "I dont like trash talk, I like to give good fight for fans"

of course he would. he dosent need to be - but there is no doubt. he made 80- percent of his income thru fights- whereas most american athletes make their majority income thru endorsements. had he been an american, or at least speak english well- he d be ablet o bring in another 30 , 40 million us dollars and - **** - anybody who says that dsoent matter- dosent like success.
we all talk about legacy legacy legacy- but thats fan ****- that keeps us up at night making lists. these guys- the fighters- they care more about money when its all said and done, legacies cool- but their fighting for paychecks. they all do. its a job for them. the other stuff is the world of fans an geeks like us. you think pacquiao sits up at night looking at all time p4p lists- worrying if he beats 3 more guys that he ll pass leonard!??! **** no. he s looking at his bank account. and so he should.

no doubt- if he were english speaking- he d be more popular. if he was american ized generally - he d be more popular. but in a way- i think what people like about him is that he s so fresh off the boat. he s such an immigrant, so naive and sincere. i think he should make a compromise and bang a fine local american girl so he can at least say he buys local and supports the local economy. :p

kobe bryant made 30 million in endorsements last year.

manny made 10 million. if manny could speak better- the impact would be that he wouldve made much mor money and his ppv numbers would probably be as big as floyds. the fact that he cant say "hey guys- tune into my fight on march 13 for a great night!" and instead can only say "i do my job- i like". means the hardcore fans arent affected- but sure- casual fans wont be interested. this is the wrong place to ask- and to the wrong people- these are the hardest core fans in the world- who will watch boxing no matter who , what or how or where its on. as if english makes a diference to us guys.

Actually he would have been more popular if he was an American. If he was an American, he would be all over the place, making commercials, sponsoring this and that, and have a gatorade ad that says, "I want to be like Pac." His inability to speak English as fluently as we want him to be plus being non-American are hindrances to making it really, really, really BIG in US. But he is getting there, although on a snail pace.

I'm half filipino and my wife is virtually fresh off the boat but her english is incredibly good.Manny is really reserved when he speaks english like a lot of filipinos who don't have a total grasp are. They don't want to mess it up and get embarassed so he speaks slowly and thinks about what he's saying.his language is much more improved than say 3-4 years ago(see "My Cletoris" interview). Donaire is a transplant.Very close to his family still in the PI,but being raised in Cali, his english is going to be much better by default.Manny never really got a proper education but English was mandated in the PI shortly after WW2 i believe so if he had gotten through school he would have learned English. He had to pick it up after the fact.Maybe it's because I'm used to the accents but I can understand him fairly well now.My father in law's accent is much MUCH thicker.

I think Pacquiao would be more popular if he was Chinese.

He speaks pretty well seeing as English is not his 1st language. What do you expect him to say? "Oh, I thought I put on a materful showing, it was an entirely spiffing performance Larry, may I thank this magnificent crowd for their cheers tonight"

Even if he did say that would it improve on his performance in the ring? No, so who cares if he ain't completely fluent?

Who's the most famous and most popular non-English speaker in boxing history, btw?

    The biggest crossover appeal?

    Duran?

    Chavez Sr.?

    Tito?

He'd surely gain more poplularity if he just took the tests and proved he is clean
