would Pacquiao have gotten more credit if he had let Oscar get into the fight?

Pac could have KOed him while at the ropes but didn't. He felt sad beating his idol.

I'd have to watch it again for that but I remember Pac laying it on him through the seventh but Oscar being saved by the bell. I don't think Pac was feeling bad for him I think Oscar just wouldn't go down. He had some footwork that got him off the ropes but he'd get sent right back into trouble. Oscar's chin was the only reason he did not go down and imo the reason why it was good the fight was stopped rather than continued.

He would have gotten more credit if he had fought Valero, Soto or Guzman or somebody like that. Beating on an old shot Hoya is nothing. Can't blame him for taking the money though.

Exactly. Excuses are very abundant here.

beating an unproven guy like Valero who hasn't faced anyone worthy is nothing

beating a gatekeeper like Soto who was dominated by Guzman is nothing

beating a weight drained Guzman who only managed a SD against Barrios is nothing.

Pac was scheduled to fight Soto and everyone was like "why is he wasting his time with them, their not great, Valero has head injury bla blah". Then he gets scheduled to fight ODLH and everyone is "OMG ODLH KTFO Pac in 1 round, OMG I fear for Pac's life". After the fight...

What I've noticed is that for damn near every fighter, there's people for whom there is no winning them over. Part of this is because the more footage we have of a fighter, the easier it is to pick holes in their style and their opponents' abilities and weaknesses, etc.

I wouldn't sweat it because despite what it comes off as, nobody bothers to try and pick apart a guy if the fighter in question isn't a great talent- it's too easy a mark to dis a guy who's just average. Guys like Maywether, Pac, and Calzaghe are top P4P talents yet going by some threads you might get the impression they're nothing more than smoke and mirrors- that's no coincidence. The bigger the fighter, the bigger the microscope and the more fans and haters he'll get. Root for the fighters you like and don't let 'em get to ya.
