I'm not saying these guys aren't warriors or aren't good in their own right, but this the best fighter in the world we're talking about. I understand you can only fight what is physically possible (that's why he shouldn't be fighting Martinez) or that are in front of you (why he can't fight Mayweather) but these fights surely can't enhance his legacy. Clottey was limited, a warrior who tried his best, but shouldn't be in there with a great fighter and the pound for pound king. Margarito was a controversial fighter, best win shrouded in mystery, limited fighter (yeah he was bigger than Manny but size isn't everything) and had a pretty bad recent record. Then we get to perhaps my third or forth favourite fighter since I started watching boxing as a lad, Shane Mosley. He puts his name out there and only has himself to blame if he gets a beating, but he doesn't deserve to be in there. Andre Berto, Timothy Bradley, Amir Khan etc all have stronger recent resumes even if they are green. I understand they don't generate the revenue that Shane could do but they'd improve his legacy for me (even if they are green.) I have no problem with Manny taking tuneup fights or fights for money. He deserves every penny he has made from boxing but I do tire of x fighter increases his legacy because x fighter is so tall or x fighter did this in 2005. I've decided to purchase my Manny Pacquiao career set before there is footage of him stopping an old Shane Mosley.
They could, however they won't. Floyd has been strung along by the not-so-random cutoff train making stops at 30, 24, didn't offer 14, no wait 14 is cool, accepted all demands, and finally at just kidding 7 days. and he has put his foot down. I don't blame him. Manny has been the inconsistent one. All he has to do is take the tests. Shane at 50 will have better defense and mobility than Margo in his prime. It would not be like that and I think that you know that. It's easy to dismiss this fight as a joke, but to say it would like Pac's latest farce is going a bit far I think. So would the rest of the world. However when was the last time Pac fought someone coming off a dramatic, KO win? When was the last time that Pac fought someone that was making noise in the division, was on the rise, or was at the top of their game. In other words, keep waiting.
Last i check marquez was # 2 @ 130 behind pacquiao Hatton was # 1 @ 140 and coming from TKOing malignaggi Cotto was just coming off 2 wins before the pac fight. Funny how so many people here in ESb got short term memory
This fight would of been good when Shane was trying to make it happen a couple of years back. But like Roach said "Shane is a better fighter then Oscar" so it didn't happen. Fighting a 39yr old Shane could still be entertaining, but for who Pac fans? This is boxing so anything can happen, Shane could maybe pull a upset, but then again this is the reason why he's being considered an opponent now and not then. It's a big maybe, Considering he's knocking on the door of 40, the odds of him winning now are slim to none.
1. I'll give you that one. It seems crazy that it was only 2 years ago, but with Pac's activity it seems longer. 2. Hatton was never anything special to me, and especially not after being turn-buckled by Mayweather and then struggling in his return bout with Lazcano. I don't consider a very convenient stoppage against "Safety" Malignaggi being at the top of the division or making noise. If you do that's fine, but I just don't see it. 3. Cotto had been dismantled by Margarito 16 months earlier and then arguably lost to Clottey!? That split decision for the WBOgus belt didn't cut it for me. He was not at the top of the division in most people's eyes, and Cotto generated more question marks than buzz leading up to the Pacquiao fight.
Actually Cotto was coming off of a severe beating by the hands of Margarito a fight where he had to be saved by his corner where he virtually quit, a win off an unknown Michael Jennings and a gift decision vs Clottey in which i thought he lost, Hatton was coming off his first loss by way of KO by the hands of Mayweather and a win against featherfisted Paulie who is nothing special. He then proceeded to fight Clottey who was coming off a close decision loss to a man Pac just destroyed (Cotto) and Clottey got a win against the inconsistent southpaw Zab Judah who gave Clottey some problems early, the same Clottey who loses every big fight, He then chooses to fight Antonio Margarito who was coming off his worst beating and getting KO'ed, followed by a win over a guy who is so unknown i can't even think of his name. Pac now wants to fight Mosely who is coming off the most onesided loss of his career, where he won one round and a draw against Segio Mora who is at best a B- fighter, hmmm, do you see a pattern here, i do, if you've just suffered a dramatic loss but beat a bum you can get a fight with Manny. If you have looked good as of late forget about a fight with Manny and lets not forget his fight with Oscar "The Skeletonboy" De La Hoya who was beyond past it as evident to him immediately retiring and the B level fighter in David "The Mummy" Diaz who was the easiest victim at lightweight to steal a title from. Pacquiao is as worst a cherrypicker as anyone in the history of the sport, that is all.
Although that may be the case, people are disappointed because everyone knows pre-fight that Shane Mosley is old and shot. His present stamina would make him s sitting duck to Pac. At least Margarito kept throwing. I'm not even sure this Mosley can beat the present Margarito. I'd say for sure Clottey would beat Shane today.
Mosley knocks out Margarito everytime they fight. Even if he is 50, he is knocking out Margarito. Clottey-Mosley would be a close fight, but Mosley would win in my opinion. Styles make fights.
Didn't they know pre-fight that Margarito was shot? :huh Folks here were up in arms and talking about boycotting the fight before the hype train picked them up. To quote Dennis Green, the truth is that Pacquiao's recent opponents "are who we thought they were!"
