Would Patterson have stood a CHANCE to beat Frazier?

If Patterson had come out of the heavyweight elimination tournament to face Frazier, can you conceive of any circumstances that would have allowed him to win?

Joe would have just been to much for Floyd!. Somewhere around the 5th Joe starts gettin to him..I see Floyd goin down around the 7th or 8th. But this doesnt mean Floyd wasnt a great fighter!

If Floyd Patterson started fast and was able to cut Joe Frazier early in the fight maybe he could make it to the middle rounds. Possibly the referee stops the fight.

It would have to be a severe cut and Frazier`s offense would have to be hampered.

That is the only way I could conceive Patterson beating Frazier.

Problem is Joe didn`t really cut throughout his career except his last fight against George Foreman.

Frazier gave too much pressure, hard to see Floyd get past 5-6 rounds

You've got to favor Joe in this one but I don't think that Patterson was as fragile as some make him out to be especially since he was simply in against a stylistic nightmare when facing Liston, a fighter who was known for his punching power and all around savvy.

He has shown grit when hurt and his fast hands and left hook may even put some rounds in the bank before Frazier gets into his zone and turns the table. Frazier started slow and for that reason alone it's conceivable that Patterson can steal a round or two from him.

Frazier has the pressure and punching power to get the job done and he was the stronger fighter.

    Nope.

Smokin Joe was really something in his youth. Even if floyd lands his best shot, at worst Joe is up at the count of 2.

When Joe lands his sizzling hook--like against foster and Ellis--it's the other guy that won't recover fast enough.

The other thing in this matchup I don't like whatsoever for Floyd is how he kept those hands and elbows up so high. I see Joe bobbing and weaving and digging that viscious lefthook to the ribs. And lots of right hands to the body which soften him up. but it'd be those lefthooks to the breadbasket that would give floyd alligator arms and Joe would come up over the top for the coup de grace.

Floyd would do much better against the other guys around at the time, but not Joe. Anymore than a later version of Floyd taking on a young foreman. There's a reason that match wasn't made.

I agree Southpaw. Unfortunately we're talking about an aging Floyd in 69 vs. a prime Frazier. Patterson had no chance at that point, or any point for that matter given his smaller size. But, I think, given all the scenerios that a 34 yr. old Floyd could have lasted for awhile. His weakness was right hands, I don't think Joe's rights would have 'iced' Floyd early.
Just another 'shout out' from me on Floyd's greatness.

I don't think Patterson would have much of chance. Frazier's a bad match up for him, Patterson is an aggressive come forward style fighter and so is Frazier, Frazier is just much stronger and has much more fire power. I think Frazier would blow him out probably in 3-5 rounds.

Frazier would have a hard time with Patterson because he would have to get down on the canvas to find him.
