I've read these comments before, and I think Kelly is just day dreaming. I can see him becoming the dominate guy at 168, and in 3 or 4 years becoming a major player at 175, bit I think that's the limit. The number one reason he is so deadly at 160 is height and reach. Those advantages will dimish a great deal as he moves up.
Pavlik is best at MW and SMW. That's where he is big and strong. He relies a lot on his good punching power, but his power will at best be average at HW. He should not fight above LHW. Him fighting at HW is crazy.
At Maximum he could go to LHW. Maybe 80 years ago he could have fought at HW. But not today. He doesnt have a bad chin, but he would be fighting big punchers who naturally outweigh him by 50+ pounds. It just isnt realistic
If Pavlik could improve his strength, maintain his stanima and keep his workrate at HW then he might have a shot. Not a good one, but a shot. But it would take Pavlik many years to gradually build his body up to that weight without losing anything in the process.
I've posted before about the 'theory' behind a knockout. Sudden head movment sloshes the brain in the cerebral fluid. That means neck muscles could come into play. So IF that theory is correct THEN you might be able to improve your chin.
I think he makes an excellent middle...moving up sometimes takes away a fighter's anvantage...I dont think Calzage gained anything moving up but Hopkins filled out @175...Delahoya put on blubber(extra weight but almost lost to strum)....165 -175 may be a division Kelly want to move up to but he dont have the frame or style to fight the Big Boys...mistake IMO
At present Pavlik walks around at 185-190, but even when he is not in training he watches his weight, and does not allow him self to balloon up. He's huge at 160, big at 168, average at 175. He would make a SMALL HW, and he tends to win fights by sucking his opponent into a war of attrition and grinding them down. His fighting style simply does not blend well with being small for your division.
It would be a bad decision, IMO. His body should fill up before 200lbs, just like happened to RJJ. He should go all the way to LHW, but not further.
Most of you forget it's not just height and weight, it's about body structure. Size of hands and bone structure have a lot to do with where a guy should fight, good heavyweights have HUGE hands, thus lot's of weight and surface to impact someone with. It's not just that guys are fatter, they are naturally bigger. With age Kelly will get bigger, and it wouldn't be unheard of to see him fight at HW if he keeps fighting for 10-15 more years.. I mean.. look at Iran Barkley, Tommy Hearns (he stopped at CW, but look where he started), and James Toney. Of course, most of those guys were sad shells of their former self's at that weight.. and Kelly would be as well.
I think he'd be stopped in two by Klitshko. His defense is not as good as Toney, Peter would also stop him in two.
Agreed. Only that Toney made HW bc he decided to be a total fatso drenched in steroids to end things. Pavlik makes 160lbs now, probably walks around at 180lbs, at age 25. At 30 y old he will probably make 175lbs and walk around at 190-195. At 35 he will probably be 200 - 210lbs and make the CW limit without much trouble. Those predictions are made considering he mantains a good shape thorought his entire career, but still are very generous, aren't they? He would have to go through a very intense physical training and diet to gain enough wheight not to climb the ring at HW with a significant physical disavantage every fight.
