No, I don't see how he could. MacDonald is too tall, and not wild enough, for BJ to exploit his edge in hand speed. That was really Penn's only chance. Penn was able to take MacDonald down, but was never able to establish control.

MacDonald is a larger man with too many skills for any version of BJ.

BJ is too one dimensional in his stand up game. No ****ing kicks. If he was to take advantage of his speed and make up for the reach he had to first break down macdonalds legs. He clearly didn't have a shot in the ground so I see this as his only hope even in his prime.

 

People will argue when Penn was actually considered prime, i believe Kenny Florian was his finest hour in MMA, therefore Florian, Sanchez gets my vote!

Based on that, and based on todays Rory MaCdonald, ive got Rory!, he's evolved beyond my estimation's, and he's now actually becoming a dangerous man, too big for prime Penn (155) and too well rounded!

Look, BJ Penn has the ability to submit king kong!, but when there are too many intangibles stacked up against just that threat, you have to call a spade a spade!

BJ is a tough man who on occassion will achieve the impossible but he is a 155 pounder who gives up huge advantages in height, reach, size, strength and power.

I thought Rory would use more wrestling but Rorys striking looks decent.

 

I dont think he would have. Find it weird he fought Machida? One thing I love about Penn wrong attitude or not he'll fight anybody. Hope he retires in good health I actually thought he would until I heard this fight announced.

 

I think the reality might be that MMA is just evolving and the same is true for Shogun, Rampage and many other former kings of MMA.

Once upon a time Rampages power used to be special, once upon a time BJJ boxing/jits used to be special, once upon a time Shoguns Muay Thai used to be special. However in this day and age the standard at which they operate is becoming common, the talent pool is getting bigger and the fighters are focusing on their training like never before.

 

He lost because he had nowhere near the skills that Macdonald has. Did he have more skills back then? No. The guy went 2-1 against Hughes and beat Sherk and Florian. THAT'S IT. Get his jock already.
