WOULD MERCER SURVIVE FOREMAN OF 73/74????? YOUR THOUGHTS.....I ACTUALLY THINK MERCERS PRIME WAS WHEN HE FOUGHT HOLY IN 95................BUT FOREMANS BIG JAB AND HEAVY BODY PUNCHES WOULD BE TOO MUCH FOR MERCER....IT WOULD LOOK A LOT LIKE FOREMAN/CHUVALO BUT I THINK MERCER WOULD GET STOPPED IN 7 RDS.....:smoke:smoke:smoke:smoke

    Nice question!

Yeah he would stop him. Under 1910's ruleset he would still stop him. There are only so many absolute bombs you can take.

TKO10 - Mercer has a great chin, obviously, but the accumulation of that many bombs would stop anyone IMO.

I think Mercer would win a decision with Foreman. I feel Mercer's chin would be strong to absorb Foremans bombs throughout the fight, in his prime he was able to knockout morrison and have close fights with both Lewis and Holyfield. I think Mercer would land alot on Foreman and win rounds easily, only chance Foreman would have is to catch Mercer with something big which I dont see happening.

George could stop him. He wouldn't stop McCall or Chuvalo, but he could stop Mercer.

I kinda agree with you..I see Big George getting tagged with that porous peekabo of his.. Although he had a decent chin...Mercer is just faster...while George was always a plodding type.
Make no mistake though, George connects it nitey nite

Its easy to say Foreman would destroy Mercer but Mercer is a pretty good boxer and at that time had a strong chin, the only time I remember him going down is when Holyfield caught on him on the button not really hurt though. Foreman can win but he would have to catch mercer early to win seeing that Foreman was a fast starter and used to throw alot of punches early then burn out as fight drew to the later rounds, but I think this is a fight Mercer could win as long as he dont try exchanging with big George which would be an obvious mistake.

A prime Mercer? I don't think so, even Foreman himself said that "there's no way he's going to get knocked out" when Lewis "sat down" on his punches against Mercer. Mercer could take a punch, for real.

I don't think Foreman used that defense when he was in his prime :huh

He had a pretty bad defense, he had poor footwork.
And seriously, Ray Mercer is no push over, he's able to cause mayhem every now and then during the fight, but I see George winning a unanimous decision over 15 rounds.

To clarify, a prime Foreman predominatly used a pat-a-cake style (similar to what Rahman occasionally does, although nowhere near as stupidly) rather than a peek-a-boo style. A peek-a-boo style is something like Mike Tyson or Winky Wright's defense, with the palms of the glove facing oneself and the elbows running parallel to the ribcage.

I can really see Mercer winning this. Mercer not only had a great chin in his time, but he wasn't easy to hit; he didn't just lunge in, but worked in behind a jab. Even Larry Holmes didn't tag him that often in their fight. Lewis, who could punch about as hard as Foreman and do so for far more rounds, didn't even seriously stagger Mercer. It helped that Mercer didn't just have an iron chin, but he tucked his chin right into his chest, making it hard to tag him there cleanly.

The big question for Mercer in this fight is stamina. Who tires first? Oddly enough, I think Foreman after the second Frazier fight (after which he became a bit more conservative) would be best equipped to win this one. If he fought Mercer like he fought Young- jabbing and waiting for an opportunity to present itself rather than throwing like a demented wildman- he would likely lose the first 5 rounds or so, before starting to come on in the second half. This would be a rare case of Foreman winning a fight in the second half!

On the other hand, I think a prime (or specifically peak) Foreman would swing away and get frustrated in the early rounds, gas in the middle rounds, and be stopped in the later rounds. So, prime for prime, I pick Mercer, but post-prime for prime, I pick Foreman. :huh

Mercer's weakness is in his body and Foreman is not a great body puncher.

Foreman might beat Mercer by close UD.

A prime Mercer is very tough, great chin and great jabs.
