    Or not?
Dangerous contender the 70 s, that's as high as he got, but in the 1950 s?

    Potential champ?
Or once again, a Contender of the time?

    Yes

I see him losing to Marciano (he has an excellent chance however because of styles) Williams (faster, more powerful, and better boxer), Liston (no explanation needed), Patterson (50-50), Machen (who would box circles around him)

Going by Quarry as a yardstick, I'd say he would be just below Machen, Moore, Patterson, Folley, Ingo etc and around Williams, Valdez level, competitive but not a champion.

Fair. But I see him beating Folley. I don’t think Folley’s chin would hold against Ron

Lyle would do fine against all but the very best heavy's
    of the era.

Probably be the same as he was in the 70s in any era.

Lyle is better than Valdez for sure. None of those names fought in the 50's execute for Williams who didn't beat anyone good in the 50s. Lyle if given the opportunity could be the champion in the 50's.

I don't think Lyle was better than Valdez or Williams. He never reach as high as either man in the rankings, and didn't beat as many contenders.

Valdez and Williams also did far better against Machen than Lyle ever would.

I have to respectfully disagree. Lyle beat Garica and Mathis. Decent fighters. He beat Bonavena, Ellis, Shavers and Bugner who were contenders. He had Foreman rocked in round one and down in round four. And I had him ahead of Ali on points prior to the 11th round stoppage with might have been too soon. This is a resume of wins far better than Williams in Valdez.

In fact it's a resume of wins over men who at one point or another were ranking in ring magazine's top ten. Lyle could have been a champion in another and nearly was...over Foreman and Ali whom he gave tough fights. In fact he did better than Ali, Foreman and Norton vs the same competition. That's serious stuff. Do you think of him differently now?

For sure he do well well in the 1950's. A champion if he fought Walcott, Moore, and Charles for sure. I'd even add Marciano in there. He could beat them and I pick him in some fights to.

Are people forgetting elite boxers walcott and Charles were champions in the 50s and difficult stylistic matchups for Lyle

If we’re talking about the elite heavies in the 50’s then he probably ends up around 50/50 in wins and losses. If we’re talking about just ANYONE who had a ranking at any given point in time during the decade then he likes beats most of them

definitely! I like Lyle by close hard fought decision

Lyle had the slight edge in physical strength and punching power and that gives him the edge. Valdes would do very well with his jab and get in a lot of stinging blows on the inside but Lyle shades it.
