Roy Jones' activity leading up to his 2004 pasting by Tarver

    2003 2 fights
    2002 2 fights
    2001 2 fights
    2000 3 fights
    1999 2 fights

    Dmitry Bivol
    2024 2 fights
    2023 1 fight
    2022 2 fight
    2021 2 fights
    2020 2 fights

    Seems very similar.

You Jones' fanboys like to make a lot of excuses.

But Jones got knocked out by an Irish guy in the amateurs, and was dropped and hurt by Lou De Valle. Jones always had a glass jaw, it was a sign of what was to come

Based on his heavy handedness, you mentioned it yourself
Bare in mind I said hurt and not KO

I'm fully aware GGG wasn't in the mould of the fighters you listed but I've always thought his punches looked really painful esp after a succession of them

Maybe not, but I think there's a question for GGG first: could he hit Roy Jones Jr. in 12 rounds? I think Roy was a real phenomenon in his prime, was able to beat Hopkins and Toney, and I think he could have defeated even a very powerful pressure fighter like GGG.

RJJ had 134 amateur fights along with double the amount of professional fights considerably more world title fights aswell as fighting better opposition overall than Bivol has.

Jones had 50 pro fights going into the Tarver battering. 50 & 134 amateur = 184 fights total

Bivol has had 25 pro fights, 25 & 268 amateur fights = 293 fights total

Bivol has had far more fights than Jones and Bivol has a fantastic resume facing the best fighters in both the pros and amateurs.

Nobody refers to Bivol as 'old'

@Xplosive's nonsense excuse has clearly been debunked :smash2:

Amateur fights are alot different to professional and world title fights.

Bivol has had about 200 rounds in professional ranks.

RJJ had over 300 rounds in professional ranks when he had his first loss to Tarver.

Also RJJ fought better opposition and as I said has considerably more world title fights.

So you cannot compare both fighters.

Fighters age differently and no one knows how Bivol's career will play out after the age of 35. He hasn't fought since the rematch with Beterbiev after having back surgery. And by the looks of it he will be inactive for atleast a year until his next scheduled fight.

This is such a lazy argument. Fighters age differently. Jones style was based on speed and reflexes. So yes, he was old for that type of fighter. He'd had, what, 50 pro bouts before Tarver. And was never the same again after. Meaning of course he was finished at age 35. Watch him pre -2000 and then post 2004. Different guy.

When there is no competition in your division but you're supposedly daring to be great, yes there is something hypocritical about actually not daring to be great by seeking better opposition. It's almost like he felt safe at MW instead of keeping his word and fighting anyone between 154-175.

The irony is that for a good while RJJ's biggest criticism was that he wouldn't move up or down from 168 to fight better opposition.

    The consensus

Did GGG ever really get hurt to the body? Maybe? Did RJJ ever really get hurt to the body and head? Many times.
