Peter would just be another contender that he cleaned up. I say that as somebody who gets that Peter was a bit better than he is seen to be today.
The fighter who isn’t hard to find had better be an absolute, rock solid all-timer if he’s in the ring with late ’50’s Liston. It’s a small club, & Peter ain’t in it.
If Williams can make it a hard night so can Samuel but he’s like 40-60lbs bigger with a chin - I don’t think Peters will win however. I don’t know where the idea of Sonny Liston the man of steel came from? He’s not an overly big cruiser weight today - not that technically dependent, he got by on his physical advantages, advantages he pretty much won’t ever have after about the 70s-80s - who that was any good did Liston outbox exactly?
I don't think Williams gave Liston trouble outside of breaking his nose in the 1st round of their 1st fight. Otherwise, it was a 1 man Liston show. And yes, Liston did hold a size advantage, not over Williams, but over many others he fought. But that doesn't mean he couldn't handle modern sized heavies like Peter.
I have a higher bar than you do for what constitutes, “a hard night.” Liston did away with Williams relatively easily both times out.
Well, for sure Sonny couldn’t go to sleep on a big, strong guy like that. Peter isn’t the type he’d want to catch him napping. Doze big Nigerian ham-hock fists could better around many a man, enough to make some hide under their sheets. But let what Sonny built, no man put aslumber. I think Liston’s jab would eventually cause swelling, giving Peter a shut-eye. After that, unable to see the artillery coming his way, it’s good night for Peter. He’d be down for a long snooze after the final blows.
Maybe - if you broke my nose I’d call it a hard night personally. Liston didn’t struggle bad IMO either, Liston reflected on it as if it was a tough fight so I’m not sure I wasn’t in there being hit upside the head. I haven’t seen Liston fight in a long time to tell you the truth but he never stood out as, as impressive as the way he’s depicted here lol.
A broken nose is of course bad news, even in a non-combat sport. But the fact the fight ended quickly & decisively thereafter mitigates it a lot for me.
Peter wide UD. Much slicker, better ring IQ, just a better boxer overall. Probably stops Sonny late if it's 15 rounds.
