Neither one of those is even remotely true.

He was not a world champion, and he had lost in submission matches.

GSP, Hughes, and other current 170lb top tier guys are better grapplers and especially fighters than Royce has ever been. Not a knock on Royce, its just a result of an exponential increase in the talent pool. How many fighters who trained full time with world class athletes and coaches were there then compared to now? Its not close.

I would take a natural 170lb BJ Penn over GSP.

GSP might beat Royce Gracie at UFC 1 - but GSP cannot beat Rickson Gracie at Pride 1.

Royce was considered one of the worse mebers of the family at ju jitsu and he defo lost a grapplintg match to walid ismal.

Absolutely but BJ is a naturally small guy.. God had he been an athletic 170, it would have been scary. Id like to see Georges against Machida

Exactly. They picked because he was the smallest and weakest grappler of the family to demonstrate just how effective their techniques were. He was not a great submission grappler.

i don't think so. gsp is good because mma has evolved. training in different aspects of the game to learn different skillsets was not available back then. you had one art, i.e. boxing, and that's it. it's all you know. gsp is great because he trains in different aspects of the game with different people who are very good in that aspect.

Depends how good good GSP is off his back, only way to beat those much bigger guys.

I think some of the big guys who could actually fight some would crush him. Severn probably pound him out. Kimo too.

Hopefully after he beats Joe Daddy and Sherk (tough match though) that is what we will get. Assuming GSP still has the title.

    UFC 1

Kimo and Severn didn't fight at UFC 1, leaving Ken Shamrock as the only threat to St Pierre, and Royce took Ken down.
