It was used in articles in reference to Bob Fitzsimmons, and Tony Canzoneri. Someone posted the article awhile ago from the late 19th century in reference to Fitz.

I think Ray popularized the term though.

There is also the factor, if sugar had come along later and say won a middle weight title in the early 90 s would he have even lost? Would have locked horns no doubt with nunn, toney and Hopkins. If he beat s those guys then Jones there's no one touching him. But that's another story.
