Would the 37year old Jack Johnson do better against Marciano than Walcott?

Put Jack Johnson in place of Walcott against Marciano in 1952 ..the same version that lost to Willard. Johnson was ahead on the cards against Willard, how's he do against the rock.
15 rounds here ,so could Johnson at 37 pull off the win ?

Marciano for me work rate and changes in the sport favor the rock. Don't like Johnson's spoiler tactics in this fight. Could he clinch and tie up rocky as easily as he did burns or someone like Flynn. I don't think so and I think Rockys work rate wears him down much much faster than Willard's very poised and deliberate style.
Johnson looks good on film so prime vs prime is interesting but many of his opponents look nowhere near as good as Rocky.

Depends on the rules and the gloves. With larger gloves Rocky is just going to shake him off and pound Johnson. With smaller gloves, where jack can really grip the biceps and latch on there is a chance he can really stop Rocky doing what he wants to do.

That was always the key to beating Marciano. Stopping him do what he was good at. Rocky wanted to draw a guy into a fight he can win. to come down and trade with him. If they wouldn’t do it he forced them to do it. But with a better grip Johnson won’t be forced into doing anything he dosnt want to do.

Johnson could really wrestle within the confines of the rules then. That’s what broke guys down. He had no intention of actually fighting until the other guy was drained enough.

Could he beat Rocky? Well I think he could fight as well as Walcott. I think he could prevent Rocky from being effective for a much longer spell under old time conditions and come on late. Sure. Why not.

Under the 1950s rules Rocky wipes the floor with him. It would just be a matter of time.

Yes.. Johnson had better stamina even than marciano...johnson could go to 20 rounds being old. Johnson was stronger physically and he was a master in the clinch. If i have to pick an old school fighter with a credible chance to beat my boy foreman it is johnson. And of course that he could beat the smaller marciano too

Johnson was ready to be taken by the time he lost to Willard, so I suspect that Marciano would have been too much for him by then.

The Rock beats him down systematically. Marciano was very, very slippery, contorting his long torso, his narrow shoulders and short arms providing little points of leverage for the guy trying to grapple him. A much larger foe would be able to lean on him and crush him but tying him was difficult.

Prime Johnson would be closer but I still take Rocky. Old Johnson, no way.

Johnson couldn't out stamina Marciano...as was mentioned before, Johnson would clinch and hold and drain lighter weight boxers. Marciano was always in fantastic shape and would love to get clinched because it would play right into his inside game.

Bad bout style wise for Johnson in any era IMO.

I’d pick Marciano to outwork him and wear him down.

    On the stamina issue:

A prime Johnson would have the edge in a fight to the finish, due to his economy of effort.

If we set the limit at 15 rounds, or even 20, then Marciano's work rate likely wins the day.

Personally, I thought Walcott was better than Johnson. If jack johnson fought marciano instead of walcott marciano would k.o. him before the 6th

Agreed. A prime Jack strong enough to at least tie him up in the clinches. Nullifying Marciano s punches and slowing him down. But by 37i don't see Jack been able to do this against the prime Rock.
I see Marciano wearing him down and a similar ending as Marciano v Louis.

I also think Marciano would beat (especially) a 37 year old version of JJ. I think Johnson liked to dictate the pace of his fights and liked to control how the bout flowed. He would have great difficulty in doing this to Marciano, and I believe that the sheer business and attrition of Marciano would either force a late stoppage or a points win.
