This is an argument you often hear on classic. That Marciano would’ve lost the Charles fight today because modern refs would’ve stopped the fight. Considering the latest Badou Jack fight, do you guys agree with the argument?
Not to give one setence answers all the time, but it simply depends on the ref. I've heard arguments that some refs would've stopped Walcott vs Marciano 1
Obviously they'd stop it now but i dont get the purpose of judging a fighter by another era's standards when it's convenient. If youre gonna force marciano to fight in the modern era but you wont let people speculate on him gaining 15-20 llbs and making him deal with modern refs and rules, then it's only fair that you also discuss his opppnent going back in time and having to fight for 15 rounds and not having access to weights or modern equipment since they didnt use those back then. Like if you put Steph curry in the old school basketball era youd end up taking away his greatest weapon: the 3 point shot. You cant say Curry is better than "insert x old school player" because of his long range shooting when the rules literally didnt allow for that player to rack up points with a 3 pointer.
I like the second paragraph. Shows how different eras value different things, therefore develop certain skills differently due to new rule sets. I think Marciano would gain weight in this era, not due to superior training methods, I think Marciano's era had fine training methods if not superior due to today's lot being crowded with fake trainers and bs for Instagram. But I think he'd gain weight due to the lesser emphasis on conditioning due to 12 rounds. He's weighed around 190 before in great, lean shape. If he was around today he'd probably weigh around 200-205lbs. Throw in PEDs and possibly even 205-210lbs, but Marciano wouldn't succumb to that imo. He'd still be a brawling monster. Counterpunching today is pretty popular but you aren't gonna make Marciano into a master counterpuncher What I fear is that Marciano would've become one of today's stereotypical fat heavyweights at 5'11" 230lbs or something of the like. But Marciano thrived off of his conditioning, no sane coach would turn him into Stiverne or Chisora
Given his short arms and stocky build and being under 6 ft i thought hed end up looking like a prime tua (when he was in shape) if he competed today or the other extreme, he looks like a shorter carlos takam if he doesnt stay in shape. Stiverne is 6'2 with a much larger frame, he was more like a chubby sonny liston who lifted weights and pigged out at the chinese buffet. Chisora reminds me of hasim Rahman and earnie shavers.
Tua in best condition weighed anywhere from 210-225lbs. I think Marciano would be a bit lower than that, since he was more active than Tua and placed more emphasis on conditioning. But Tua and Marciano do have similar structures Lol Chisora is like a Rahman/Shavers that needs to get out of the buffet
Good Lord, not this trope again. Marciano's chest measurement was 39", Tua's was 49"... but they had the same bone structure. OK.
Tua has no chest measurement as far as I've researched. You also told me that Ken Norton had a 46" chest, even though that was EXPANDED, which you were comparing to Marciano's relaxed measurement. Foreman had a smaller chest that Norton, your point? Anyways Tua was fat and had more developed chest muscles, of course the measurement would be larger
