Would this be a better guideline to who makes the hall of fame?

Boxing's hall of fame is too liberal. I think part of the problem is there are no benchmarks or set of rules for the voters.

Below are 15 questions i'd like to see asked for fighters who fought in their primes from 1920 to present.

How long was the fighter champion in years? ( 4 or more to check the box )

How many title defenses did he make? ( 5 or more to check the box, alphabet titles fights included )

What is his record vs. fighters in the top ten when he fought them? ( A winning record over 70% or 5 wins total to check the box )

Was the fighter ranked high in pound for pound ratings for a period of time? ( Use ring magazine rankings for modern fighters. Judgement call for old timers. 3 years to check the box )

Did the fighter have good longevity for the game? ( Lineal or Ring Magazine Champion at age 35 for old timers, 38 for modern era fighters to check the box )

Who is the best opponent he beat? ( Should be a champion, or #1 contender to check the box. An easy one to check )

At his best, how good was the fighter? ( Your best call, critical for fighters who died young )

Was the fighter avoided or ducked from getting title shots, which likely shortened his title reign? ( Like Liston was, who could have been champion much longer )

Did the fighter add something extra to boxing ( Bring in new fans, participate in a fight of the year, Score an all time KO, become the 1st of a race or nation to win a championship, Score a memorable upsets vs. an ATG, ect... )

Would the fighter have been champion in at least three previous decades ( Your best call . 3 or more decades to check the box )

Was the fighter a good ambassador to the sport of boxing ( An asset outside the ring, famous outside of boxing, and a clean fighter in general to check the box )

Was the fighter a lineal or ring magazine champion in more than one of the classic 8 weight class ( 2 or more to check the box )

Was the fighter a popular draw for live gates and television ( Your best call )

Did the fighter make an impressive comeback after 3 or more years away from the game to become champion again?

How many losses or draws to non-top ten level fighter in his prime? ( 2 or less for fighters with 40 or less fights, 3 of less for fighters with 50+ fights needed to check the box )

    Scoring tally:

Fewer than 7 boxes checked the fighter should not make the hall of fame!

If you check 8 to 9 boxes, I say the candidate is borderline unless he's a heavyweight due to the importance of the division.

10-11 boxes checked = Induction over time

12 boxes checked = A virtual lock to make the hall of fame

13-15 boxes checked = Clear first ballot hall of fame candidate.

    Thoughts?

I respect you went through a lot of effort, but I can't see it myself. Sorry

Fair enough? Why? They way I see it the boxing hall of fame has been watered down, and these qualifying questions would be a good guideline to keep the quality higher.

Using your criteria, Floyd Mayweather gets in right now ... no questions asked.

I think the only criteria he misses is was he prevented from getting a shot (never) ... (unless you count Pacquaio not wanting to fight him for years and vice versa) and was he out for more than three years before making an impressive comeback (he was out for two).

You could almost check off every box when looking at his career.

Also, using your criteria, Jack Dempsey gets removed from the Hall of Fame. Immediately. (As would most of the guys he beat who are in the hall.)

I think Demspey qualifies for eight of the 15.

So ... kinda controversial. I think Mayweather should qualify right now. But I don't know if Dempsey "waters down" the Hall of Fame.

Which 8 did you check for Dempsey? I looked and checked more than 8 for Dempsey. Perhaps 8 or more should be the bar? Fixing it for now.

I was trying to remove the lesser fighters we see year after year...

I think Maywather is a lock for the hall of fame. He is the best pound for pound fighter for years, and has beaten others going to or in the hall of fame.

Champions, Contenders and TOP Noted fighters...

    Longevity
    Opponents
Number of fights... (example - mickey mouse titles won at 16 fights, defended a few times need not apply. unless of course they are fought and won against above legitimate fighters.

History documents, thousands of Great Fighters, Thousands... so being stupidly stringent (stupidly), would eliminate Hundreds of fighters who ARE/Were EQUALLY GREAT.

the truth is too many already lose out, why would you want to deny further possible entrants yet?

I don't think Maywather is a lock for the hof. I KNOW he is. He is getting in on the first ballot, no questions ask, best fighter of his era, rule for a really long time, I don't see him missing the cut on his first year.

Hell yeah mayweathers a lock. For sakes, Ray Mancini just got in. All the Halls of Fame in evry sport are popularity contests. Mancini and Gatti are NOT great fighters. As a paper champ, after Arguello had already KO'd him, the Boomer avoided every ranked fighter in the top ten and gave the shots to non entities. And still had a hard time. He hid behind the repulsive WBA mandates and avoided good fighters. He is in for the sme reason King and Suliman are in: he brings in fans to the induction. Why is Pintor not in? He pd fpd would have to poor Ray's head off. The great and recently dead Ken Stabler is not in the football hall. Concepcion not in baseball hall. It is a popularity contest.

Really wish they didn't get rid of the gen forum for bs talk.

But I felt Ken Stabler should of been in the hall LONG ago. In his time, stat wise, only Fran and Rodger were better, yeah Terry had more rings, but he was just as likely to give the ball to the other team, were that fame defense would preform. Stabler has a ring, has about ten good years of winning, and perhaps was the 3rd or 4th best QB in his era. I don't know why he is not in the hall.

The NFL should be ashamed that Stabler is not in the hall, and more ashamed that Stabler died, and didn't get that gold jacket that he earn in his life time.

An interesting concept, but most of the above is still just as arbitrary as what's in place now.

    Good topic, great effort.

Are there any instances where this would exclude any current Hall of Famer? I can't think of any?

They certainly would, and your right some names are in their that you could make a case for, but might not warrant a place. Criteria does seem a little bit harsh in some areas, excuse my laziness for not finding examples of who wouldn't make it but should.

The problem here is that you can click almost every box for a guy without ever having to watch him box. You're just going off titbits of information.

    This isn't top trumps.
