Would today fans like fighters like Willie Pep, Billy Conn, and Pernell Whitaker if they fought in this era? I know today fans like the action fighter or the brawlers but would fans like the defense first fighter in this era? These fighters are some of the best ever but would they get there respect if they fought in this era?

They would obviously have a strong following of diehard fans, but your average boxing fan wouldnt be drawn to them.

If your fed Fast Food Boxing like so many of us have, anything that doesnt look like a crackhead tramp mugging a pet ****** is boring. ****, Ken Norton would be dull and bordering on sleep inducing.

Whitaker wasnt boxing THAT long ago, and we remember how he was receieved, plenty of plaudits but needed the big names to make the big money. Much like floyd Mayweather today.

Willie Pep would be ripped to shreds, just look at the 'haters' that Malignaggi, Spinks, Winky Wright get...

Yes, I think true boxing fans would love to see fighters who have truly mastered the art such as Pep, Conn and Whitaker. Anyone can go to amateur matches and see two guys stand toe to toe and slug away until they are unable to lift their arms. Amateurs haven't learned the subtleties of head and body movement, parrying, vision, counter punching and clever defense. This is the mark of a consumate professional.

Dude, their is a million miles of talent between Winky Wright and the "Tragic man" Malignaggi.

I think that willie pep would be a lot more popular than winky wright is because pep's defensive movement is more interesting looking than winky's shell. and yeah, gotta agree with bomber that a comparison between winky and malignaggi is pretty absurd.

I don't see why anyone would dislike Whitaker, unless they were fans of the brawlers and pressure fighters he routinely schooled. His style was very pleasing to watch, I don't see how anyone could consider a prime Pea boring.

Pep also had a very awkward but fun style, and one that absolutely dazzled the opposition. I think he'd be a fan favorite as well. These guys played to the crowd, don't forget that. They weren't just defemsive fighters.

Probably not great technicians like these three wouldn't get much appreciation today and it's really a shame.

Those who put defense 1st 2nd and offense 3rd will always need a more popular offensive opponant to get fans in the seats.

You either need your vision checked or are just extremely stubborn. How does someone who threw 100 punches per round in his prime consider offense 3rd? Honestly, how do you back that up? Watch this. No running, mostly all offense.

Don't bother man, Ram isn't fan of the sweet science but rather a fan of brawling. I've always said he would be better suited to the UFC or Toughman contests.
