Whatever you persoanaly think about the result of the fight at the weekend, Pascal clearly became the top name in the division after he beat Chad Dawson. Pascal is the man that Burns would have to beat to get the ring title. If Hopkins had won the title he would have found himself up against a more game and relentless fighter than Pascal in Burns. Burns would go to his body and would be unlikley to be detered by Hopkins counters. You should be verry wary about picking Dawson over Burns after Pascal beat him.
Who has Hopkins fought that hits as hard as Burns? I think that if Tommy were around today, he would be fixated with his punching power and would train with virtually nothing but weight lifting. This would make him a much slower fighter and balloon his weight to well above the light heavyweight limit and badly effect his speed, mobility and endurance. Also, i get the impression that his bodily shape would not fare him too well with all the modern nutritions and supplements found in the various fast food outlets. I also think that this would tend to effect his overall effectiveness, as his power and size would not deem well without any form of endurance. And todays on average bigger heavyweights would probably hit harder than him. and cause him major problems overall. Still, he was a clever fighter and he would maybe capture or at least put himself in the picture for a title fight. I think he is probably some type of David Tua styled fighter, a little like we saw in the Ike fight. If he maintained his old school training tactics in the current environment, that would be a different story. I dont think there is any doubt that he would win the current light heavyweight title. Burns vs Hopkins would certainly be a great fight.
1. Like Holyfield was still HW Champ after he drew with Lewis? Officially Pascal is the champ but not the people's champ, so yes Burns may well beat Pascal, but Pascal has a shot, his last 2 wins were very impressive before this 2. Why does anyone think fighters walk through counters, it doesn't happen unless a fighter is seriously underpowered. Plus who's ever hurt Hopkins to the body, good defensive fighters are hard to hurt to the body. And Hopkins is a better bodypuncher than Burns from what can be seen on the small amount of film on Burns 3. I'm of the opinion the Pascal loss is a freak loss for Dawson, we shall see
.. Roy Jones, maybe Echols and Tarver are all comparable punchers if you watch some of their brutal knock outs, I'm sure you'll agree. Trinidad despite him being smaller was a hell of a puncher. What you have to remember is, all these punchers couldn't land their best punches on BHOPs because the old mans defense is just too good I always thought Echols was an underrated win [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ibtc45FVwKM[/ame]
You maybe right, that clip of Echols certainly does look very impressive. Though Tommy Ko ing the much bigger fighter also looks impressive, from a power perspective also. There is no doubt taht the three fighters you mentioned could brutally KO fighters (virtually any pro fighter can, especially the good ones). But i dont think that the fighters you mentioned have the same bone jarring and hurting power with each punch that tommy had. Roy is the best known example. He certainly hurt John Ruiz with his punches, but it was because of the speed and number of punches he landed. I think that Burns punches did more damage at least i think they did. I guess the flipside is that that they didnt seem to hurt Jack Johnson who was the best fighter he fought, all that much when they landed. It is hard to tell, but i do get the impression that Bernard has never fought a fighter who hits as hard as Tommy. Still, I am quite confident that Bernard could take the bigger punches anyway.
:good I can imagine Burns picking up the super-middleweight, light-heavyweight and even cruiserweight titles.
You have to alow that Burns wrecked a number of fighters over 200lbs. That in itself should suggest to you that maybe he is a more formidable puncher than these guys. Marvin Hart who he beat for the title was a good 195lbs.
