Tony Thompson was a heavyweight contender in the 2000’s. Fought Wladimir twice. Would he at least be a contender in the 1980s. Maybe a fringe guy ? Possibly a brief alphabet title holder ? A possible challenger for Holmes ?

No chance. He’d scrape the top 35 or so.

People boxed back then. People don’t box since the 90s - gyms scarce and empty.

Not in a pro boxing country truth be told, but we have a single pure boxing gym in our state but dozens of BJJ, Muay Thai, Mcdojos, MMA and Taekwondo gyms the gym the boxing gym i am talking about has produced champions but is so thin for numbers WWs sparring LHWs is a natural sight...

I agree that he wouldn’t be a world beater back then. But to suggest that he’d barely scrape the top 35 is to say he doesn’t even beat some of the journeyman or obscure prospects of the day.

Honestly, no. I don't think he ever gets his hands on a belt and he doesn't crack the top 10 ... Maybe top 20 or so ...

He's really not that good of a boxer ... And it was a joke that he even challenged Wlad twice ... He was no match for Klitschko

Yes,I think so ,the following were ranked in that decade.
    Tillis
    Bey
    Cobb
    Biggs
    Mercado
    Snipes
    Mason
    Norris
    Damiani
I think he might beat some of them.

Thompson was a tall, durable, decent boxer with ok power. More importantly, he was a pro who showed up prepared every time unlike a lot of 80s guys.

He would most likely beat Bonecrusher, who was a worse boxer and probably wouldn’t crack his chin. That’s one title he could take. Then you’ve got Berbick, Weaver, and Coetzee who were smaller and not all that great at outboxing people. More chances. Then you’ve got Dokes, Witherspoon, Thomas, and Page who didn’t show up in top form every time. There’s also Tucker who was passive, Tate who faded, Holmes who was past it and underestimating opponents by the mid 80s, and Spinks who was undersized.

He’d probably take a title if given the right chances.
