Would Tyrone Everett have been great if he didn't die?

We'll never know for sure, obviously, but let's assume he fights the following:

    Samuel Serrano 1978
    Alexis Arguello 1978
    Bobby Chacon 1979
    Ruben Castillo 1979
    Rafael Limon 1980
    Rolando Navarette 1980
    Cornelius Boza Edwards 1981

Where does he stand say, by 1982? Would he be great if he took on all those fighters?

Frankly, I favour him over all the fighters mentioned there, with the possible exception of Arguello. I'm not sure how good Everett's jaw was, but if he can take Arguello's punch he's 90% on the way to winning their fight because I struggle to see Arguello winning more rounds.

    Thoughts?

Well, he certainly toyed with Escalera. (Unfortuantely, the snake Alfredo wore around his neck was apparently one of the judges.) I remember Tyrone "Butterfly" Crawley citing Everett as his inspiration, declaring the belief that he was the best in the world P4P. But footage of him needs to be made readily available for modern boxing fans to have any opportunity to further evaluate him for themselves.

Possibly, he definitely had a shot, but most likely, would have to get out of Philly for title shots.

    Absolutely yes,,,,,,,

A wonderful quick-fisted boxer who clearly was one of the top
130 lb. fighters in the world.

I've said for a while I think Alexis should've been grateful he wasn't around. Very tough matchup for Arguello IMO.

He beat escalera quite clearly from what i've read.

Although it's hard gaugeing his ability given his lack of big name opponents.

The WBC Super Featherweight title fight against Alfredo Escalara wasn't even close.

Every ringside observer had Tyronne Everett winning at least 10 rounds.

Associated Press had it 146-139 (11-4-0) in rounds.
United Press had it 146-141 (9-4-2) in rounds.
Philadelphia Daily News had it 146-140 (10-4-1) in rounds.

I scored it 12-3 in favor of Everett. And the rounds weren't close either......it wasn't like you could make any serious case for Escalera. Easily the most disgraceful decision I've ever seen. The fix was in for sure. No one is THAT bad a judge.

    sasla,,,

The fix was in,,,,,,,,is an understatement,,,,,,,,,,,it was a 'Super Fix'

See, Lou Tress (Boxing Judge from Philadelphia)
    A Philadelphia resident,,,,,scored it 145-143 (7-5-3) Alfredo Escalara

Everyone in Philly knew Lou Tress was bought for that fight.
He screwed his own hometown fighter.........:patsch

The shocking thing about his scorecard. Lou Tress was regarded
as a 'Homer', always giving the Philly fighters the close rounds.

He went completely against his previous history.

Insiders say he got a retirement gift from the WBC officials
    and the Philly/Puerto Rican connection.

The 71 year-old Lou Tress had been judging fights since 1935.

The guy never judged a boxing match again.

    Bing Bang,,,,,,,

    Here's the scoring,

By the way it was announced in the Spectrum.

Mexican Referee; Ray Solis (148-146) = (4-2-9) Tyronne Everett
    An amazing 9 rounds even.

Puerto Rican/American Judge; Ismael Fernandez (146-143) = (7-4-4) Alfredo Escalara

Philadelphia Judge; Lou Tress (145-143) = (7-5-3) Alfredo Escalara

It was kind of expected that the Puerto Rican Judge would score the fight
for Alfredo Escalara, and that Lou Tress would side with Tyronne Everett.

The Spectrum crowd was in total shock,,,,,,,,,

Lou Tress avoided any interviews regarding the fight. And he got a police escort
    out of the arena.

He was getting incredible build up by boxing writers, but in one fight of his I saw (can't remember opponent) he was very good, but was not as great as they were making him out to be. He was still developing though, and would have been good contender at least, maybe title holder.

He essentially already was a title holder, beating Escalera with little hassle.

Everett usually draws comparisons to fellow southpaw Camacho for style, but he's more methodical and technical than that.More like a speedier 130 Kalule.

I think there's a good possibillity Everett would have been great. I'd favor him over all the fighters on the list except maybe Arguello. Might eyes tell me he'd be a nightmare for Arguello. But Arguello would put in some work to the body and would have caught him at some point. Hard to say whether he could have gotten through the championship rounds. But regardless, Arguello still would have moved up to 135. I think he would have been a force until Camacho came on the scene. That would have been a very interesting fight.
