I mean, he isn't out-Ali-ing prime Ali. I also don't like his chances of not getting stopped by Liston, Tyson, Lewis, and maybe Foreman. It may be surprising to some that I haven't mentioned Louis, as he's known to be my all time favorite heavy - but I'd have to concede here that Fury's size and movement are realistically pretty daunting obstacles.
Fury is better than Ali He is no headhunting clincher. That's Wlad's job in the modern era. 60/70's heavyweights matched well against each other. All sub 220 pounds >6'3". Heavyweight boxing is different now with Fury being the first of his kind in the sport. Plenty of Wlad/AJ's will come and go, we'll not see another Fury for yonks. Take Marvin Hagler make him 6'5" 230 pounds then you have the man to beat Fury.
A threat sure. Six foot nine, two hundred seventy pounds and can move well for a big guy. However, as @IntentionalButt said Fury isn’t going to dominate great heavies of yesteryear but would always be someone you had to bring your A-game to beat.
Of course. His gigantic size of 6'7¾, 260lb+ with his world class/elite level pure boxing and his all arounder skills make him a MAJOR H2H threat. Lets take the nostalgic glasses off. Fury is elite level. That being said styles make fights. Wallins swarming and body punching gave Fury issues and Wallin was 6'5 235-240lb during that fight (about the same size as prime Riddick Bowe) and we know Wallin is no Riddick Bowe. There are 2 fighters who i'd absolutely favor over Fury. Lennox Lewis and Muhammad Ali. Lewis was 6'5, 245lb and fought agressivly against taller men. He has the size, the power and skill to impose himself on Fury and Lewis has the MUCH better resume as well. Ali on the other hand posseses better ring iq, better movement, and quicker hands than Fury. We saw how Steve Cunninghams slickness gave Fury issues and was even able to put him down despite being pillowfisted at cruiserweight let alone heavyweight. Fury has gotten a lot better since then but keep this in mind. He still has yet to fight a small mobile heavyweight since then, and Cunningham is NO Ali. Ali also had a better gas tank and was iron chinned.
70's HWs matched well against other eras as well, as old versions of Foreman and Holmes showed in the 90's.
Agree with this pretty much 100%. The very best Lennox Lewis is a H2H monster for any HW that ever lived to have to contend with. We didn't see the very best Wlad Klitschko against Fury either and Vitali and Riddick Bowe would give Fury all he could handle. The very best Evander Holyfield would be on his chest all night and the Iron Mike who demolished all in front of him prior to Tokyo Douglas would give Fury fits as I doubt Fury's power would trouble him. I'm not fully convinced that Fury is the best of this era; I think he is a favourite over Joshua but no more than a 60/40. And Ali in his absolute prime could definately out jab and out work Fury, this is a man who did 15 rounds for fun against all comers. Were rating a guy who hasn't even defended a world title over and above certified ATG's. Not for me just yet.
Fury's size, mobility and skills give him a shot in any era. But to say he walks through everyone is a bit much. The HW division today is just not that deep. He hasn't been tested to the extant many of the greats were.
Hard to say. But as has been said, his unprecedented combination of extreme size AND advanced skills would be hard for anyone to deal with. Fury is a true one-of-a-kind giant that also has amazing boxing skill
