Mike Tyson walks in to a boxing gym, Cus is not there to mould him around the peek-a-boo style. Did Tyson have the ability to succeed nevertheless? I don't think Tyson had the boxing brain or the heart to make it without the tutelage of D'amato. He showed in his post-prison career he was very limited put under pressure both mentally and physically.
Dude was an athletic freak. He may not been as successful, but I think he would have won the title at some point.
Agreed. As important as Cus was to his success, I feel Tyson often doesn’t get enough credit for succeeding due to his own unique characteristics.
Have you seen early Tyson, his balance was way off and he was very easy to hit. Cus and his team also got him in to the mentality that no others could, he had lots of self doubt.
This content is protected An inexperienced youngster is obviously going to be rough around the edges. Cleary a ton of talent to work with though.
He had been training under Cus for quite a while by then. Chances are he would fight nothing like that training in a different gym.
This. I highly doubt another trainer would've been as patient and understanding with Tyson as Cus was. If Cus wasn't around Tyson most likely would've been another guy that had the potential to be champion, but never did and I also think Tyson would've went to prison a lot sooner without Cus looking after him.
Of course he would have. If the argument is that he wouldn't have, that Cus was the key ingredient, not Tyson, where are all the other Tysons he created? If he could make Tyson great without his having the ability to be great without Cus - there are millions of men in America who fit that description. Any very good trainer could have made him a meaningful heavyweight. At the least.
Tyson had the ability to be a champ under any number of trainers.imo Also I beleive Atlas did most of the hands on training in Tyson's formative years. Cus trained his mind. D'Amato died before Tyson's 12 fight.I think his influence on Tyson's boxing can be overstated.
Err, a certain Mr Patterson? What style would he have excelled at? True he was a youngster but looking at early footage he was very ungainly and quite easy to tag.
He'd arguably have been better with a fleet-footed style. Liston would certainly have agreed. The idea that an extremely fast fighter with a vulnerable chin could only fight with a peak-a-boo swarming style is a little rich, to say the least.
So what style of fighter would Tyson have been? He would never be a great inside fighter as he was very lazy and welcomed the clinch even at his best. Giving away such height and reach he would have great trouble dominating the division like he did.
An extremely green Tyson in the clip above appears to be a better boxer already than 99% of the seasoned professional Heavyweight boxers campaigning today. And, that includes Wilder.
As a pure slugger, Tyson would have been a force. As an ultra aggressive bob and weave fighter he would obviously have been excellent. I really am not sure where you're going with this. These questions all have very obvious answers from "would he have been good" to "what style would Patterson have used" to "what style would Tyson have used". They all have very obvious, easy answers. A fast puncher with a good chin and a good trainer is obviously, very obviously, going to do ok.
