Probably been covered more than once.... But if it hadn't have been for the cut, would Vitali have maintained his lead and won? Both looked exhausted and Vitali was comfortably ahead, but Lennox did look like he was getting back into it - or was that him just trying to work the cut and force the stoppage?
My personal opinion is that Vitali would have given a good/great match but would have ultimately fallen short. Very difficult to say since he was boxing with a cut for most of the 6 rounds we saw. Just feel that Lewis had too much for him that night. I think you're right in saying Lewis was getting back into it/out of 2nd gear, Vitali appeared to have thrown his best work and Lewis was still there swinging. I would have loved to have seen it continue but the cut was super-bad. IMO the fight showed that a younger, hungrier Lennox would probably have done for Vitali at his best but we'll never know. Glad it happened since it's one of the best HW championship fights in many a year.
Younger Lennox was more timid and not as kocky. It needed this kocky and brash, older and more experienced version of Lennox who was arrogant enough to trade with Vitali toe-to-toe to beat Vitali by stoppage. Younger Lennox would have turned this into a strategic chess game which he either would have lost by KO or won by UD.
My guess is no. Lewis seems to have found his rhythm by the end of the fight. This is idle speculation in a way though, because the cut was always going to cause the stoppage. It was a hideous cut, and Lewis was determined to target it. Wherever the reff had drawn the line on it, that point would ultimately have been reached.
You may be right although I wouldn't say the younger lennox wouldn't have retaliated had he been under the kosh........a great match up still even though there was a bad cut and controversy. Good points made though.:thumbsup
Didn't they ban these threads haha. Vitali was cut badly, and holding on for dear life Lewis had enough left to stop Vitali in the next round. 93 Lewis may have lost, doubt it. Vitali basically has nothing for Lennox.
WOULD VITALI HAVE BEATEN LENNOX? Under which circumstances? Because as sure as **** he COULDN'T beat the 38 year old out of shape one.
Its possible given how tired both men were. But saying that he would, is kind of like saying " well if so and so hadn't landed a KO punch, then the other guy would have won."
Who the hell knows:huh Vitali was the better man that night and won the event, but bottom line Lennox won the fight:deal One thing for sure it's a damn good thing the match was stopped or Vitali might have lost his eye, that was one of the ugliest cuts i have ever seen, and i have been watching boxing since the 70's....
I know. Its probably one of the most commonly googled photos of the past 10 years and it sure doesn't look like the minor scratch that so many Klit fans make it out to be.
