Happened as in the match being left in boxing history as a Godly classic.

Watching some old classics and it's been years since I have seen this fight and something I haven't thought of before..

What year ish would Gatti have been stopped in round 9? There are 2 times in that round when Gatti is viciously getting tagged with no defense nor offense. I figure the ref would have jumped in during the first barrage after the knockdown in today's time, let alone towards the end of the round.

That being said, today's "soft" era is better for the fighters' long term health, but DAMN I miss old boxing!!

    how old are you? 13?

For a 13 years old kid maybe 2002 is another "era" where men were tougher, for grown up men 2002 is yesterday. There's no difference between 2002 boxing and now, kid.

    Depends on the ref!
Gatti and Ward's corner knew they were warriors who could come back and win fights.

The fight would still happen in the same way but nobody today (other than us hardcore) would give a **** because neither fighter has his "0".

People would be calling it a bumfight, "Judahs leftovers fighting Oscar's leftovers" etc.

Quite unfortunate what has happened to the culture of our sport

The comission did a great job of assigning a old school ref in Mr Frank Cappucino to ref it.
Everybody and theirnother knew what type of fight it was going to be so a trigger happy ref would have ruined it.

What a weird flex you are attempting there. If you don't think there is a difference between 2002 boxing and 2020 boxing then I'm afraid the game has passed you by. Time for the armchair and walker buddy.

I apologize for your tranny boyfriend leaving during the middle of the night and you waking up on the wrong side of the bed.

You do sound mega older than me and you seem proud of it. I am happy for you.

We all know who and why had the biggest impact for this...

If you are a true boxing fan there is absolutely no way you can be a fan of his. Appreciating and giving props for talent and being a fan is different by the way, I am not knocking on him... but I legit cannot understand how anyone could be a fan of this particular individual if you love boxing.

Do you think that teofimo vs lomachenko would be possible in today's era? I dont think so. Old timers like teofimo were so much tougher.:roto2lol:

    Ridiculous thread.

At first I thought you were doing some half ass trolling, but now I know the answer.

This post actually tells me you are on Broner's level of intelligence.

To be fair to him, nearly 2 decades is enough to call it a different era. The guys fighting in 2002 grew up in the 80s early 90s and it was certainly different than growing up in the internet era of 2000 and after

mathysse-provodnikov was more brutal and it was only five years ago..brutality in boxing hasnt varied since the 90, the same applies to referees tendencies to stop fights.

Gatti fans were the best! They enjoyed and appreciated what the man brought to the table, even if it wasn't superior skill. His heart, durability and willingness made good fights which in turn created loyal fans, win, lose or draw. In today's climate a fighter with 3 or more losses would be called a bum and the only fans he would have is his mom and dad.

Well we have seen a few fights stopped too early over the last decade due to some tragic accidents in the sport.
I think the OP @Stonehands is just pointing out the safety of fighters is at an all time awareness in same states.
Hell in TX they would let em fight to the death then and now
