Would you back Penn to beat Edgar in a 3rd fight if...

Prime BJ yes, at this point no. The infamous late in the fight wilting would kick in, but maybe Penn could build up an early lead. But I dont think 2011 Penn would be able to do enough damage to Frankie as he'd be constantly chasing him on the feet and trying to keep a highly active Frankie on his back

 

No, Edgar is insanely hard to hold down (Sherk and Maynard couldn't really hold him down either) these days and is BJ's kryptonite.

Penn is does not match up to Frankie Edgar at all , Edgar is a surgical striker who throws in combinations of punches and kicks , he's in out , and he's quicker than Penn as well as being technically better and putting together combinations and moving out of range .

If he wants he can go to the wrestling and attempt to take BJ down ala Edgar Penn 2 , Edgar has a better engine than Penn , better movement , he's stronger , and has better stamina .

Penn has a JJ advantage on Edgar , and has a power advantage , but thats as far as id go .

I will always maintain that Edgar caught Penn at exactly the right time in his career to cash in , that said , that version of Penn would still of finished / beaten a lot if not all of the remaining LW's in the UFC , so its still a good win for Frankie .

I really want to see BJ revert back to what he was doing with the Merenovich bros for his fights with Kenny and Diego , that was without doubt the best version of BJ Penn thats ever fought , but he's a family man , who's wealthy and content , im not sure he has it in him do move from Hilo and take his camp back to San Diego .

 

Penn could win that way or he could win if he landed a good shot on that fragile mandible but I wouldn't bet on it because for the former to happen he'd have to have a much better gas tank to grapple with a competent wrestler and scrambler for five rounds and for the latter he'd have to have more handspeed to make it anything more than an off-chance.

 

Nope. If he goes back to Lightweight he better hope something weird happens to Edgar where he loses the title and doesn't ever have to fight him again.

No. Edgar has his number, "holding Edgar down" is easier said than done. He pops right the **** back up and he's relentless in his own right, so very fast and nimble. I wish I could see him against Faber/Cruz.

No way frankie is more improved and has insane footwork and moves constantly throughout a fight. Frankie also doesnt stay in the pocket and throw bombs like Bj does he's more calculated and wears his opponents down by the 4th and 5th round he f**king dominates his opponents.

 

No and especially not with that gameplan. BJ will wear himself out even earlier then usual and Frankie will dominate even more so then he did in the rematch last August. Frankie is a bad style matchup for BJ and hes simply a better fighter right now.

 

I still think that Edgar would take a decision on him, but Penn would still have a chance with his Jiu Jitsu if he can get him down.

BJ was more aggressive in the 2nd bout, and look how well he did. By the time he took Edgars back, he was too tired to hold the position. If he fights even more aggressive than that fight, and he'll be lucky to go the distance.

I liked his approach in the 1st fight better, and thought Penn won. I think he needs to fight a similar fight to that one. Penn has amazing dexterity, and learns as quick as anyone. I think he should bring someone into camp, and work on leg kicks. It's tricky to kick against someone with Edgar's wrestling pedigree. That's why he should test it in camp first. When Penn was patient against Edgar, I thought he landed the better punches. If Penn can mix in some good leg kick with the more effective punches, he'll slow Edgar's footwork; and make Edgar an easier target.
