Would you be surprised if De La Hoya KO'd Pacman in the 1st Round?

    Let's not judge.

I think of myself as one of the more knowledgable posters here when it comes to all of Pac's fights since 1995.

But even so, I have not seen too many Calzaghe, Margarito, Mijares fights, and also many of the very good Euro fighters today.

I suppose you're right. My own knowledge of guys like Mijares and Calderon (ie lower weight champions) is not exactly world-class, nor does my own knowledge of Pac extend way back to 1995, and I consider myself a big fan!

Do you mind if I take this opportunity then, to quiz you about the pre-Barrera Pacman?? Did you know as soon as you saw him fight that he was special? What was the standard of opposition like that he fought in Asia? And have you seen his defeats from before he came to the West?

Don't confuse prime Oscar with the Oscar of today. Remember how little Stevie Forbes scuffed up Oscars face? Imagine if Paq hits The Golden Douche as cleanly . It would serve DLH right if he picks on a little guy and gets his big round head handed to him. I've lost all respect for Oscar with this one.

    Sure.

Special, in the way that he's a brave young kid, with a big punch and a bigger fighting heart. Yes.

But I never thought he'd get as famous and as successful as this. I thought he'd be one of those cult favorite club fighters, TV friendly and always gives an exciting show. Maybe he'll win a domestic title at 112, and fight for an Asia Pacific title at age 24. Then by age 28-30, nearing the end of his career, be handpicked to fight a legit 112 world champ, and fight the fight of his life, seriously hurt the champ and still lose, ala Rocky I.

He always fought really tough Thais, Japanese and Koreans. For his level at that time, it was a very tough circuit. He was almost always outboxed and out thought by the veterans, but his power and relentless ferocity eventually won him the fights.

    Ex.

Pac (Challenger) vs Sasakul (Lineal champ)
    December 1998
    112 lbs World title
    Thailand

The round where he clinched his first actual world title.
    He was 19 years old.

    I've seen them all. Yes.

Thank you so much for that reply amigo, brilliant to hear from a truly knowledgable fan from the East (I'm guessing you are, since you have seen all these fights??) :good

So, how did Pac lose exactly? Were the guys he lost to top drawer Asian fighters, or did he just get caught, or was he beaten stylistically??

yeah bula really does know his pac stuff since pac's early days. i have watched most of his fights also but cannot remember them clearly as bula can. all i can remember was pacquiao really has the power that can stop opponents in one shot. mostly he had high level of competition since he always fought thai fighters which are the arch-rivals of pinoys in asia. mix it up with some other fighters in the asia-oceana region like japan, australia and russia.

i did not expect pacquiao to get to where he is now. i just felt then that he is too flawed and crude to beat the best fighters in the world. i never imagined also that he would fight eventually at 130 and 135 for he was really short for that weight. the barrera fight really impressed me because that was the first time i saw pacquiao moving that fast. yes even faster when he was fighting at the lower weights of 112 and 122.

I think Manny has fast hands, but I don't think his ring movement is top notch and his defense is pretty weak. He can be hit.

    Anytime, man.

    I'm from the Philippines.

He lost because of the recklessness and cockiness of youth. And wide open defense too. :patsch

His first loss was from a Filipino, just a regular domestic fighter. No one special.
He got KTFO by a looping overhand left.

And when he last defended his 112 title, also in Thailand, he lost becuse he couldnt make weight anymore. He lost a lot of fluids trying to make weight and was very weak come fight time. Everytime his opponent hit him with body shots, his reaction looked like he got stabbed or something.

He was stripped of the title. Even if he had won the fight, it would still have been vacant. The Thai won by early round TKO.

That was his very last fight at 112. Jumped to 122 lbs soon after that.

Pac could win this if he fights smart. I'm starting to warm up to this fight. It would be huge.

I wouldn't class myself as some kind of hardcore fan, but I do have an interest in the game.

I'm from the UK so I saw a lot of Eubank, Hamed, Lewis etc on SKY TV when I was younger. However I went a number of years without access to SKY so I kind of missed the rise of the Pacman.

I had seen some YT clips of Pac, but the first time I watched him fight live was against JMM. I was impressed with Pac but more so with JMM who I thought just nicked it. Then when I watched the Diaz fight I was like, "Ahh, now I see what all the hype is about" - awesome performance.

Hahahah, thought this was a good bump...

    Oh, how wrong people were.

The love for Oscar was out of control here considering he lost 3 of his last 4 and was fighting at 147 for the first time in 7 years.

Great win for Pacquiao to launch him to stardom. Funny, at the time most of these guys would've probably said it would be one of Pac's top 2 or 3 wins, and now it is widely recognized as not being in his top 5.

It's funny to see the people who saw it coming, and accurately predict things about the fight, but were skeptical to go bold on a prediction of Pac winning...

How did Puga go from this to the most rampant "Manny is god" ******* on esb?
