Would you class Mcguigan as "A legend"

Him, Hatton and 'Enry Cooper are clear legends of the sport.

the fact is, he had a great victory but that is really all she wrote. he is hugely relevant to the british scene but gets lost when taking all fighters into consideration.

 

No. Qulaity fighter to watch, I've enjoyed his contributions to boxing outseide of the ring for as long as I can remember. He wrote one of the whittest boxing articles ever the other week about the Pacuiao-Marquez fight.

I couldn't disagree more with the people who think places in the HOF should be earned solely on their record. He gets a hard time with the "If Barry is in there..." comments but IMO there is a few that have a comparable record without the popularity that Barry acheived, the likes of Mitchell and Gonzalez come to mind.

 

He is a legend because he transcended the sport. He is a legend for what he is not necessarily just his boxing career but its all tied in together.

 

Gatti will get in and he did a LOT less than Barry and was roundly average throughout his career.

It's the Hall of Fame, not the hall of accomplishment.

 

He had some good wins, like bernard taylor, Jose caba, jual la porte and Daniel cabrarea... But to be honest, in the 80's, albiet later years of the 80's, i was more impressed by dave mcauley and couldnt help mentally compare the two at the time.. differenet weights, but based on accomplisments, one was getting huge huge praise while the other i thought was overlooked a bit by comparison

McGuigan is a brit boxing legend, even if he doesnt have the W's to back it up.

To sum it up, I was at a Scotty Harrison fight years ago, & as SKY were covering it McGuigan & Johnny Nelson were up in their 'box' & all the scottish fans on realising McGuigan was up there were shouting up to him 'Bazza your the man' & stuff, no one gave a **** about Johnny Nelson, a fellow world champ.

Anyone who remembers Barry McGuigan has a story to tell about a time they were watching him fight, including my good self! & when a boxer has that sort of adulation? How can you argue... I used to moan about McGuigan cos I was certain he was jealous of Scott Harrison, cos TRUST me, Scotty was THAT dangerous untl he ****ed it all up.

I remember the week before he fought pedroza the priest at mass on sunday made everyone say a decade of the rosary for him...seriously...and there was flags everywhere, every small lane had something up.

 

I honestly believe that you had to be around at the time to appreciate how good he was. McGuigan was a smashing fighter, supremely fit and lived the proper life. He was so far ahead domestically that he was actually given a lonsdale belt and as for europe, the best they could offer lasted 3 rounds. From around mid 84 til the Cruz fight (which i still think he just about nicked) he could have held his own with anyone in the world. When he fought Pedroza, it took him 15mins to make the ringwalk, such was the crowd in Loftus road. 15 ****in minutes!!! He beat a still good Laporte, a very good bernard taylor, a decent Cabrera and a still useful Pedroza......not a bad resume by anyones standards. He also shared top billing with Roberto Duran and Tommy Hearns in Vegas, again no mean feat.But all that balls about him uniting people was shite, that was for the cameras. McGuigan is and always has been, a very media-savvy guy. The only people who were 'united' were boxing people who knew a good fighter when they seen one and,trust me on this, there is still nothing that i have seen or experienced like a McGuigan fight at the kings hall, with maybe the exception of Hatton in his pomp.

Worldwide?
Im not so sure. To be a proper legend you need longevity which is something he never had

 

cooper, no, not a legend, but worth a mention as he should have beat ali. mcguigan, yeah, hes a legend. hatton, no. he beat an old, ring rusty tszu. and thats about all.
