Barry is a great humanitarian to. If only Mayweather used his status positively to inspire as much as what Barry did.

sums it up for me. ask any british/irish person their favourite boxers and i bet our 'enry, big frank and Barry Mcguigan would be the top 3.
suspect if you asked the yanks though, they might struggle to remember who he is/was.
listened to that loftus road fight on the radio.still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up thinking about it, even now.
he's also a damn good ambassador for boxing as well, so he's doing an immensely valuable job to this day.

In Ireland and Britain, definitely...if you asked someone from Ireland or Britain, over the age of 30, that isnt a boxing fan to name 5 boxers, he's very likely to be mentioned, probably within the top 3 mentioned.

He was a great wee scrapper, not the most technical boxer, but in his day, he was up there with the very best of them. Added to that, hes a genuinely nice person, and one that still does a lot for boxing.

I think hes better known and better respected (in Ireland and the UK) than the likes of Johnny Nelson, David Haye, Amir Khan etc is because hes much more likeable as a person, he tells it like it is and isnt bitter, bigoted or arrogant.

He is in some ways,he had a good career in boxing but he isn`t really legendary as a fighter.It was more what he did for his country.He is still well known years after he retired and few people have a bad word for him.I suppose its how you look at it,people will still talk about him in 20 years time so I guess he is a legend.

 

He's more deserving to be in the Hall Of Fame than Ricky Hatton (if he gets in)

Vilasana was tougher (than pretty much anyone, ever), he'd outlast McGuigan.

Esparragoza would land the better shots and put McGuigan away late.

bruno is a national tresure and al he did was scrape a wbc title...doesnt ean he wasnt a good fighter and showed everythign a fighter should be.

Anyone who's old enough will always remember his dad's rendition of 'Danny Boy' before his fights. Great memories as a kid.

Good strong featherweight McGuigan i woulda liked to see him go on a bit longer but he had a good career. He does a lot for the sport and is probably the best pundit about.
