I wish they could've made the fight with Nelson in the aftermath of Asumah putting Cowdell to sleep. "We want McGuigan!" For me he was a great fighter to watch at that time. Brought a lot of excitement, but no, legend is too strong a word for Barry.
:scaredas: Nelson would've been too far IMO. Unlike Esparagoza and Vilasana (which I stand by) tha shouldn't be too controversial ;-)
I wouldn't have expected him to beat Nelson but it's a fight I rue because we never got to see it. Not that I'm sadistic.
McGuigan was absolutely idolised in his day, he was a huge sports personality, especially in Ireland (North and South). The day before a fight, everyone was talking about McGuigan, there was such a buzz about his fights then. Even at school I can remember one of my old teachers dropping in references to McGuigan's fight in class. We used to watch reruns of the fights over and over the next morning. How many kids now will sit down with their friends and watch reruns of boxing on Sky or wherever the next morning? And I doubt I will ever experience an atmosphere like the that in the Kings Hall when McGuigan and Hugh Russell fought there on those magical nights. Great memories.:good
