Would you consider Meldrick Taylor an Atg?

Anyway, insinuating that Julio had doctored gloves is ludicrous. Duva is the kinda guy who watches things like an eagle.

 

Insinuating that Chavez's gloves were loaded was ludicrous. It was Vegas. There was Finkely, Steele and Duva in observation.

Otherwise, I generally like his input if I don't always agree with it. And I realize the tone of the post was not my best moment.

No, after your comments i revisited him and the guy had blinding handspeed. I'm not talking about punches in bunches either.

There is no way possible his handspeed could be classified as "mediocre". "Average" would be a ridiculous assertion too. "Fast" would be the least you could label him, and even then one would risk a bit of stick.

Here's an interview from 3 yrs ago. I couldn't get the sound to work but from the comments he doesn't sound good.

Yeah, I found this a while after I asked the question. He sounds positive bu you can't tell half of what he is saying.

Not a sport for the faint of heart, folks.

 

He was always going to be more of a shooting star, an excellent fighter for a short period of time, rather than an ATG with longevity, Chavez or not. Maybe if he was born in a different time frame and didn't have such terrific talent around him at 147 it may have been different, but it is what it is.

I like watching some of his WW fights though, like against Aaron Davis and Glenwood Brown. Taylor was showing signs of the Chavez beating (and probably Philly gym wars) against Brown, as well as being a naturally smaller guy, but he gutted it out through his toughness, desire, and his great bodywork and workrate.

Not his best win (that's Buddy McGirt, then Aaron Davis), but it was a nice win and a good fightz

 

I wished I could answer this question as yes! First I guess it depends on your criteria of ATG? Taylor is one of my favorites and IMO is a Philly ATG, but that is not quite the same thing. As has been alluded to already even if he had beaten Chavez his resume does not quite add up. However ATG status does not diminish his accomplishments nor a fans enjoyment of his fights. Many of my favorite fighters both past and present are not ATG's...Meldrick was a warrior, and you always knew he would look to fight the best and give his all!

 

This basically, in a nutshell.
