Would you consider Pacquiao a true household name in the US now?

Early estimates on the ppv #'s for Pacman/Hatton are very promising. Pac vs Hoya did very well and Pacquiao's performances have been amazing in both those fights.

ESPN is starting to really cover Pacquiao, and most of my friends who are casual boxing fans a year ago had no idea who he was and now they have seen him fight either DLH and/or Hatton and of course are pleased with his style and look forward to see him fight again.

Can we put Pacquiao up there with Ray Leonard, Tyson, and De La Hoya as someone when many Americans see him they say "that is the best fighter in the world"?

It's a legit question. Before the Hoya fight many people thought boxing was practically dead and had no idea who the hell he was. The question now is have enough people cought on to Pacman fever.

nope. its a shame he wont get there. his english is average and he belongs to the minority group. without floyd, hatton and oscar in his name, he will be just 300K to 500K PPV buy.

Not in my book he isn't. I ask people on the streets and everywhere I go all the time, and nobody has heard of him. Maybe it is just because boxing isn't so popular in Washington State.

Well they were losers if they didnt know who Pacquiao was, after all the mexican greats he beat. Beating DLH did make him even a bigger star though. Pac-PBF does 3 mil buys easy. biggest fight ever, money wise and most seen that is

Keep spreading the word. I have turned a lot of people onto him. People are glued to the TV when they watch him fight. Just show them the first Marquez fight and they are hooked. :D

I do my best to do so. It's strange, I even asked a good friend of mine who is a Phillapino body builder and ex MMA competitor if he knew who Pacman was, and he had no clue.

Please his fight with Marquez the 2nd time did 400k buys. Respectable but no where near iconic status. The way you are describing it is he should have done a million for the Diaz fight because he KO'd so many Mexicans.

Boxing is on the way up but it is not where it needs to be. As one of the top 3 sports in the country. :good

No, for the simple reason that boxing is no longer a mainstream sport in the U.S. It is an outsider sport that doesn't receive much mainstream media coverage. And, because we all have to pay for premium cable channels, and fifty bucks for PPV cards on top of that, it is becoming an elitist sport as well. Normal people who aren't maniacal boxing fans already won't pay that much money, and many of the ones who are die hard fans can't afford $100 a month in PPV cards anyway.

Pay per views are ****ing bull****, anyway. We don't have to pay $50 to watch the superbowl, Yankees-Red Sox, etc. Yet we're expected to pay it every time there is a half decent matchup, even when there is absolutely no guarantee that the fight will live up to expectations?

Pacquiao isn't any less exciting than some of the great fighters from past generations that you mentioned. But unfortunately, the situation is such that he'll never receive anything close to the level of popularity that Tyson, Leonard, etc. were able to attain. There IS no boxer that is a household name in the U.S. And that's likely the way it will be for quite a while.

Him being Filipano does not hinder him but like you say he isn't very fluent in English and that does hurt. He isn't the best person to interview but he is humble and people like his personality.

    Unfortunately not YET(or maybe ever).

I'm still hearing responses like "yeah, I heard that FIlipino guy won"!

BUt at least he is starting to get some type of mainstream recognition!
