Would you describe Evander Holyfield predominantly as a 80s HW or a 90s HW?

I'd say the 90's since that's when he became the undisputed champion. Also I feel like he was at the peak of his Heavyweight powers during the 90's as well. I think he was in his absolute "physical" Prime when he fought Douglas and Foreman (90-91)

But some of his most impressive wins like Bowe (93) Mercer (95) Tyson (96) are what cemented his career but I feel from a physical standpoint point he was maybe never the same after the first Bowe fight but he became a MUCH smarter fighter (most of the time) in the mid 90's.

Holyfield is primarily known for what he accomplished in the 90's so I'll go with a 90's fighter..

But 1990s more so.

I think he did enough in the 1980s to deservedly end the decade as #1 contender for the undisputed championship though.

 

At heavyweight? Probably more 90's. As a fighter in general ? I would have to say both. He Medaled in the 1984 Olympics, turned pro and conquered the cruiser weight class by 1988, and establishing himself as basically the best ever in that division. By year end 1989 he was a solid number one heavyweight contender.. In 1990 he claimed heavyweight championship lineage. Then went on to battling in some of his more memorable outings, winning and losing in super fights. I don't think you can categorize him as being representative of one decade over the other. Its kinda like asking " Is Muhammad Ali a 60's fighter or 70's fighter?"

Had almost all of his defining fights in the 90s.Bowe, Tyson,Lewis, Moorer etc

He was better in the '90s

His competition through Foreman was pretty weak.

Tillis and Thomas were shot, Never were Stewart and faded Dokes were surprisingly competitive. Douglas was just there for the $24 million.

I think the loss to Bowe was a wakeup call.

He became a little more elusive - a bit better defensively after that.

Changing trainers was probably part of it.

 

interesting to watch holyfield here, giving up youth and size at 44 yrs old. but man he was a puncher, always. 80's, 90's, 00's

Yeah, I can't choose either of the poll alternatives. 80's Holyfield was a light heavy, cruiser heavy phenom. 90s Holyfield had the HOF Heavyweight career.

 

80's holyfield fought pinklon thomas and michael dokes at heavyweight that i can remember. became heavyweight champion in february 1990?

at the time, nobody was impressed with those late knockouts. not with tyson running buck wild at the same time.

 

I consider Holyfield a 90s heavyweight.

What's ironic though is that Holyfield-Dokes was voted the Heavyweight Fight of the 1980s by Ring Magazine, I believe.

I don't know what the heavyweight fight of the 1990s was. But it's interesting that Holyfield was involved in what was considered the best heavyweight fight of the 1980s even though most don't view him as an 80s heavyweight.

I do not find that interesting. Other than Quawi, all of Holyfield's defining fights (in terms of legacy) came in the 90s.
