its amazing to think i have a friend on here who seen armstrong box live. its astonishing really. you would have seen my old trainer box too...jackie turpin, featherweight brother of randy, who fought on the undercard at the polo grounds...a.j. leibling was there too and described him as looking like kid berg btw....how would you describe tommy bells style...i read he was similar to robinson in a lot of ways.
Tommy Bell was tallish like Robinson, strong and hit very hard. The difference was Robinson's combination of amazing speed, power and accuracy in his killer combinations. SRR had to be seen to appreciate...
I think because Mickey Walker as a welterweight lost his welterweight title to Pete Latzo in 1926, because he starved himself trying to get down to 147 pounds, and had to go up to the MW class. But Mickey Walker at his best would have been a match with any WW in history including Ray Robinson. Tough, muscular and powerful was the Toy Bulldog...
I don't think I'd make any WW the favorite over Sugar Ray Robinson but here are a few who would have the best chance of beating him- Sugar Ray Leonard Thomas Hearns Henry Armstrong (prime) Manny Pacquiao Roberto Duran Sugar Shane Mosley Oscar DeLaHoya Pernell Whitaker Floyd Mayweather Jr. Felix Trinidad
I also saw SRR in sparring for the Turpin fight in 1951 above a pub in Windsor called the Heart & Garter, but I was considered too young to attend the fight by my old man, who went with his brother and some friends.
It's so hard favouring anyone over Robinson. I don't think I see him being out boxed at all. But maybe someone who's just as quick could out punch him. Mosley, Tito, Oscar or Hearns would all be able to hurt him, maybe they win enough exchanges to take a close fight.
I don't think it would be a good idea for those guys to exchange with Robinson for any longer than necessary. He KO'd as many guys as the last three of them combined. They would have to try to outbox him, exchanging only when they had too.
