This is a huge problem with boxing. In the U.S. every state will honer and respect California's suspension but other countries are not obuglated to do so. Boxing needs international rules, and If I were a boxer or maneged a boxer at 147 I would not fight Margarito any where for any amount of money for as long as he is under suspension.
Hell yes I would. A decent payday, and an all action fight against a faded opponent who recently likely had his mental edge stripped from him. A big name, a good fight, and decent money. Id take it in a heartbeat. Especially if I could punch.
As you said this is a huge problem in boxing since there is no umbrella organization that can sanction a fighter internationally, unlike in other sports like basketball. The irony is that there are so mant alphabet soup boxing organizatins who call themselves world boxing organizations but whose real intentions is to ask fighters for sanctioning fees. LOL that's the million peso question. LOL good luck with that.
If Im someone like Paul Williams, Cotto, Berto or Clottey....no If im Judah, Collazo, Quintana or Hlatswayo....yes
No chance. In fact I'd ask why any self respecting fighter would give this guy a shot/payday again? Although, I could understand your mid-card guys who don't get paydays going to Mexico for a nice little earner. This would also keep Margarito fresh and provide him with some pocket change. As for the top 10-20 guys. If any of those guys go to Mexico and fight the cheating ******* they lose my respect instantly. He should be out on his ass not this slap on the wrist bull****.
It wouldn't be that big a shocker if Cotto agreed to fight him in Mexico. There are a lot of plusses in it for Cotto.... 1) Margarito's hand wrapping would be watched like a hawk before the fight so the chances of further cheating would be nil. 2) Mosley just published the blueprint on how to beat Margarito. It would be a very winnable fight for Cotto. 3) Margarito's carreer is in the dumper so Cotto could expect a very nice purse split. ( At least 50-50 maybe better ) 4) Never underestimate the motivating factor of revenge. Plus the public appeal of watching Cotto try for redemption against the boxer who beat him ( and likely cheated while doing it ) would probably make up for any folks who tune out over "Cheater disgust".
Fight a cheater in his hometown?, no one world rated would accept that. However, as Chavez Sr.'s record already proved, there are WAY too many cabdrivers and bartenders in Tijuana, one of those will gladly accept.
