Would you give any fighters pre 1920 a good chance at being champion today?

I don't think Jeffries has a chance. Heavyweights today are too big and too powerful to engage in the attrition game.

I would pick Leonard and Greb to have the best chances. Packy McFarland and Tommy Gibbon would do well. Plenty of non-heavies would do well. And we have seen mediocre fighters grab a belt in these days.

Any videos of Greb to showcase how good he was ?!?:rolleyes::rolleyes:
Since there are none, there is no proof whatsoever he was more skilled.

I am sure that a fair few fighters who were NOT champions in the 1920s, would be champions today!

Quite a few would ave a good chance to be champion today.

    Wilde - Fly
    McGovern - Bantam
    Gans - Lightweight
    Gerb - Middle weight
    Fitzsimmons - Super middle
    Langford - Light heavyweight
    Dempsey - Cruiser weight
    Jeffries - Heavyweight

I'm pretty sure McFarland would run **** like gauntlet from 135 to 154.

You can see videos of the men he beat. That's all the proof you need as to how skilled he was.

All good picks except Jeffries. I would give Johnson a far better chance of getting a strap. Both would be outsized today but Jeffries dumb crouch and proclivity to eat punches would lead to farcical results in the modern ring.

I'm not sure, Jeffries was quite athletic and he wasn't really undersized (220 lbs in his prime). He already had very good wrestling skills and was good body puncher. Give him some time to adjust for bigger gloves and shorter fights and we'll get strong and tough pressure fighter who was talented enough to hold his own against today top tier.

I know the film of him is not the top quality but he looks mostly dreadful. Almost laughably wide open. Also, that such old and small fighters went so many rounds with him does not scream to me of potential in an era of highly skilled, amateur groomed and freakish heavies.

So, the color line, declared or undeclared, was a good thing for boxing?
