Would you pick any fighter to beat Joe Gans (at his best) at Lightweight over 45 rounds?

I don't think I would, curious to see if anyone disagrees.

I can't really think of anyone.

It would be best for someone such as Duran to get a quick KO in a 45er to win (not that I think he would).

Armstrong is my strongest pick here

Maybe B Leonard and Duran if they can stop him fast enough. Wouldn't be confident

Battling Nelson always has a shot over 45, even if he did lose to Gans.

Arguello has a loose puncher's chance

Probably not. Unless Duran, Armstrong or Mosley get an early KO

Julio Cesar Chavez would have a chance to break him down long before the final round. Julio had great footwork, could still close the distance in amazing fashion at 135 and had damaging power.

A bit out of left field because he didn't stay there long but he was dependably dominant over a variety of styles in the mid to late 80's.

Why does it have to be an early KO? Why not a KO in the 8th round or 10th round or 13th round, etc? It’s seems that it’s either a quick KO or its 45 rounds in which case Gans automatically wins because no modern fighter can go 45 rounds.

was this the best Joe Gans? If so I'd pick most lightweights to beat him. In this fight his skills and style remind me of some MMA fighters that I've seen in 4 round boxing matches, Gans and his opponent pose in front of each other, then one leaps in with a punch, the other grabs and they grapple, then repeat. I don't remember a jab being thrown, but one or two might have been? Who knows, but the fight was not impressive.

    Yawn.

I don't think you ever answered when I asked you how the change in glove size ought to effect boxing styles, nor have you seen to have picked up anything from previous threads you've posted to involving Gans, but you sure have repeatedly accused me of saying something I didn't say anything vaguely alike.

But you seem to think I wouldn't remember all that.

    I wouldn't pick anyone tbh.
But I give Henry Armstrong the best chance. He has better stamina than any one post that era, and his workrate doesn't drop... also has enough pop in his punches.

Now Pat M suggest that Gans didn't have a jab. Another good quote.

More seriously, his fight with Nelson is unbelievable. Even after 30 rounds of action, they still fought fresh as in the first one. I can't see any fighter doijg that today.

What are your thoughts on Benny Leonard, Pat?
