This thread was not started to turn Tim Witherspoon into a great fighter. But, curiosity has always gotten the better of me when thinking about him. For many years, I have always wondered how he might do against some fighters who managed to crack into the realm of greatness, even though he didn't.

Spoon did after all, go 12 rounds with an undefeated Holmes and fought him to a very close verdict when only having 15 rounds. He beat prime versions of Greg Page, Tony Tubbs, Frank Bruno, Renaldo Snipes, and Boncrusher Smith.. He also beat past prime versions of Jose Ribalta and Carl Williams, plus was arguably robbed against Ray Mercer when he was past it himself..

Now, I'm not asking anything crazy like " would he beat Joe Louis, or Muhammad Ali " I am however wondering if he might have had a good night against the likes of guys like say Floyd Patterson, Ingo Johannsen, Joe Walcott, Jim Jeffries, Ken Norton, Max Schmeling, Max Baer, Ezzard charles, Wladmir Klitschko, etc..

At his best Witherspoon was pretty good and at his best does have a chance to beat greats. Sorry as I can't give as deep of an insight I want because I don't know much about Witherspoon but I think he had a good chance against Tyson. It's ashame he isn't talked about more because he is a two-time champion. He's sooooo criminally underated.

He could probably beat Patterson on a great nite.

Spoon had that overhand right....and might "Ingo" Patterson with it.

Spoon could kick some ass when his butt was in gear and his head intact........ Too bad that was off and on throughout his entire career...... Inconsistant to the maxi-pad....

Spoon could take Patterson. He'd definately beat Sharkey.

I dont know if he was consistant enough to beat Norton, he had a punchers chance but I think you needed more than one punch to get Ken, Foreman did and Tim would flurry if you were hurt but did not really set a pace in a fight. He would have chance against Ingo, Patterson may be too fast and conditioned.

I agree that Norton is a tough call.

Ken's reputation as being "chinny" is a bit overstated I think. He was really only stopped by the very hardest of punchers, and at least two of those occasions came when he was past it. He was also a pain in the ass for fighters that tried to set people up with the jab, which Tim sometimes tried to do, though I wouldn't exactly call him a pure boxer. Again, its a very tough call. I'm inclined to say that Norton takes a decision, but I say this with no real conviction. On the right night, when all the stars and planets are in perfect alinement, Witherspoon could have scored a KO.

I always thought he had the style to beat Tyson and that he was avoided. He was more solid a fighter and had a better chin than all the guys Tyson fought in the 1980s. Tubbs,Thomas etc. And he had a right hand and he was a good puncher. Witherspoon I thought could beat Tyson.

Ken Norton was a good fighter, but he too, lost to most of his "A" opponents....... Norton also choked in fights that he needed to win..... For me to consider him truly great, Norton would've had to have beaten Foreman in '74 and KO'd a faded Ali in 1976..... That would've been plus factors for me............. Also, getting smoked by Earnie Shavers in 1979 really stings me bad, too...... I'll let the KO loss to Cooney slide.....

I think Ken Norton got some generous voting a few years back when he was inducted and praised as being a great fighter........

Well, great in a watered down sense. I guess I wasn't being consistent with the title of my thread when I listed some of those guys....Sorry.

do you mean take out boxers that are top 10 at any givin time in a year? .. like if he were to take on the top 10 ranked boxers of 1973 .. yes he could possibly beat a norton ..

but in an all time great sense you'd have to come up with a consenses list of all time greats you know?

i believe he could beat the follow heavyweights

    archie moore
    floyd patterson
    ingo johanas ..
    tommy morrison
    wlad klitchko
    cleveland williams

i think timmy at his top would put a beating on alot of fighters from the past and the present .... if you took say the spoon the night he went nose to nose with holmes he'd whoop the **** out of alot of fighters ..

TW was seriously talented but his happy go lucky and sometimes lackadaisical demeanor probably curtailed his chance to be great instead of just very good. There is no doubt in my mind that Spoon' could have have beaten some of the linear HW champs from yesteryear.... I don't however, favor Spoon' against any all time greats like Dempsey, Louis, Marciano, Ali, Foreman, Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis, etc.

I do think he could have beaten guys like Sharkey, Schmelling, Baer, Ingo, and 50/50 Patterson

Well, I am opposed of Ken Norton being inducted into the IBHOF up in New York......... I think Norton got a gift decision there........ However, we can't erase what has already been done........ Ballsy as this may sound, if Norton is in the IBHOF than I think 2X WBC / WBA champion Tim Spoon should be there too........ Why the hell not??

Spoon has a resume with some damn good names attached to it......... Maybe not names like "Ali & Foreman," but names like "Holmes and Page." You know what I'm saying???

Well, I think just my first two tiers (Top9) beeing true all-time greats and thus only Jeffries from your list can be considered. On that, I think, Jeffries would beat Witherspoon in his era and Witherspoon Jeffries in his. Mostly due to the rules of the time.

The others were great fighters but fell short of this. I think he has a live chance against all of them but wouldn't be the favourite against any. The best chance he has is Norton, Baer and Johannson and it's 50/50.
