i was just wondering about this, i know the hall of fame is becoming more about fame and less about achievement but among the names of hw inducted

    johnson
    depsey
    marciano
    norton
    frazier
    foreman
    ali
    liston
    patterson

    and future names

    holyfield
    lewis
    tyson
    holmes

would tim witherspoon fit in with these greats?

some only know him for his losses to everett martin and james smith

but aside from that his resume is pretty close to great,

    2x title holder

    beat 4 hw champions

has wins over at a dozen contenders including carl williams, james tillis and renaldo snipes who where neck and neck to being title holders.

has questionable loss to older holmes ( i scored it 116-115 witherspoon after watching it).

if we look soley at the induction of james braddock then im sure he has a good chance, i think he may get within the next few years.

If Witherspoon gets into the Hall of Fame, I'll squeeze my nuts through the gap in a park bench and stand up very quickly.

If McGuian can get in, Witherspoon can as well. It seems any fighter who held a world title is eligible for induction.

If Witherspoon does get inducted into Canastota, I'd laugh rather than squeeze my nuts through the gap in a park bench then rise quickly.

    I'll keep my nuts.

No. Getting KO'd in 1 by Bonecrusher Smith disqualifies him, as does a loss to Marvis Frazier. Manassa, Don't do it! Witherspoons not worth it.

No, but let's look at it objectively. In a weak future year year with many lower weight fighters on the ballot, Witherpsoon can get in.

Witherspoon for my money is better than Ingo, Braddock, and Godfrey. Those guys are in the hall of fame too. He just lacks the fame and fans, which is half of the voting process.

    HELL NO.....

People can not keep using McGuigan as an excuse for others deserving to get in. McGuigan is the exception, yes maybe he should not be their, but its happened, doesnt mean we need the hall diluted further.

Tim Witherspoon never even fought Marvis Frazier, and the concensus of most people is that the Smith fight was a dive.

That being said, I'm not sure if I can classify Witherspoon as a hall of famer, but I'd say he's at least knocking on the door.

Witherspoon defeated a lot of ranked fighters throughout his career, Tubbs, Page, Smith, Broad, Tillis, Snipes, Ribalta, Williams, and Gonzalez. Also for whatever its worth, he was a two time champion, and also held a variety of small regional belts here and there as well. His fight with Holmes early in his career, as well as his bout with Mercer late, were both contoversial losses, and we have to take into account that his career was largely hindered by corrupt promoting and politcs.

Witherspoon can never be mentioned on the same plain as Holmes, Tyson, Lewis, Louis, Ali, Foreman, Marciano or others, but he was definately a well acheived fighter, who stands on the boarder berween good and great.

Witherspoon wanted to fight holyfield around 89-91, why didnt it happen, i would have given him a very good chance of winning.

No. The HOF should be for specail fighters. Not just ones that have won a belt.

I think Tim just misses the cut, if he was judged on his career up to 1986, he might have make it, but his overall work, at times embarrassing.

On his boxing achievements? No. Not for me. But, in terms of fame as it's a hall of fame, also no.
